Ruddock dismisses Hicks study (Gitmo military commission)
Edited on Wed Sep-15-04 07:34 PM by soaky
The Federal Government will not protest against the United States military commission trying David Hicks, despite an independent report finding the Australian terror suspect will not receive a fair trial.

Attorney-General Philip Ruddock yesterday dismissed the report by Melbourne barrister Lex Lasry, QC, conducted on behalf of the Law Council of Australia.

Mr Lasry was the only independent Australian lawyer who observed Hicks' preliminary hearing in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, last month.

Mr Lasry found the commission was not independent and rules of evidence were all but absent.
