THE widow of a soldier killed in Iraq claimed yesterday that his life had been "expendable".

As Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon today faces the Hutton inquiry, Samantha Roberts, 32, claimed her husband would still be alive if he had been given the correct equipment and training.

Sgt Steven Roberts died trying to calm rioting at Al Zubayr just days after the Iraqi conflict began. Mrs Roberts, from Bradford, said: "From what I can gather, I don't think he stood a chance. He didn't have a flak jacket and his gun didn't work."

Relatives of another dead soldier are also deeply critical of Mr Hoon, right, and of the political motives for the war. Rob Kelly, 54, whose paratrooper son Andrew, 18, died in Basra, said: "What the hell was Hoon or the Prime Minister doing, going on holiday when the country is in a mess and the Hutton inquiry is going on?
