WP: Debate Lingers As Monument Is Removed From View
Thursday, August 28, 2003; Page A03

Workmen levered a 5,280-pound Ten Commandments monument onto a dolly and wheeled it into a back room at the Alabama Supreme Court building yesterday, ending a confrontation that initially unified evangelical Christians but ended up deeply dividing them.

Evangelicals across the country had cheered two years ago when Alabama's Chief Justice Roy S. Moore installed the granite marker in the building's rotunda. But when he disobeyed a federal court order to remove it by Aug. 20, religious conservatives began quarreling among themselves.

(snip)

People on both sides of the debate predicted yesterday that it will continue because conservative Christians are growing increasingly frustrated with federal court decisions and more inclined to civil disobedience. If the U.S. Supreme Court upholds the ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit that the words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance are unconstitutional, "then I think you will see sit-ins and people refusing to pay their taxes," Land said.

(snip)

David Williams, a spokesman for the state Supreme Court, said lights in the storage room where the monument was placed will remain on 24 hours a day. "It's just symbolic of respect," he said.

2. People refusing to pay taxes?
Do you suppose anything will happen to them? Probably not, since they are righteously protesting. I am sure the fascists in the admin. will instruct the IRS to look the other way, thus freeing their resources to audit as many Democrats as possible.

4. Why does the right wing want to display the Ten Commandments
but they don't obey them? Isn't election fraud a form of stealing? They want to hide behind the flag, commandments or anything else they can think of.

3. symbol of respect???

Symbol of respect? It's a waste of electricity, that the taxpayers will pick up the tab for. Unbelieveable. The fundies (who don't pay taxes for their empires) don't hesitate a bit to make the rest of us pay their share.

5. The Ten Biggies
The bible thumpers always insist that our country and our very laws are a result of the 10. What a load. Only two of them even deal with anything covered by law. Murder and stealing. The code of Hammurabi would be a much better example of something that has influenced our laws. It can be found at: http://eawc.evansville.edu/anthology/hammurabi.htm. English common law is another example.
I will be sorry to see this die down though. Watching those idiots cry and moan and scream have provided a welcome comic relief to the usual depressing news.

6. Let's review the commandments Bush has broken
1. Thou shalt not steal
2. Thou shalt not bear false witness
3. Thou shalt not kill
4. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife/oil/natural resources

Anyone else? Surely I'm forgetting a few

8. What's to debate?
The Constitution is clear, our founders have spoken, now those opposing the Constitution are cordially invited to STFU.

9. I hope they win
I hope they get the right to have that rock placed back in the rotunda.

Because the only way that will happen is if I will be allowed to place a golden calf right beside it.
