Hundreds of slaves freed in Brazil

By Jan Rocha
BBC, Sao Paulo

In Brazil, government inspectors from the Ministry of Labour have freed 849 workers being held in conditions of slavery on a coffee farm near Barreiras in the state of Bahia.

Labourers are forced to clear forest
So far this year inspectors have freed more than 2,000 workers from forced labour, mostly in the Amazon region.

In March, the government announced a plan to eradicate slave labour in Brazil.

Government inspectors who had been tipped off by a local politician raided a coffee farm in Bahia.

9. Sorry, it was a typo!
I like him too. One of the few leaders whose heart is in the right place and who is acting on his promises.

7. Repugs would love this......
one step beyond cheap labor is
free labor. Now if they could
only figure out how to make
them feed and shelter themselves
on their own 6 hours a day free
time.

11. The poll on the NG page is horrifying
Edited on Sun Aug-31-03 09:11 AM by kayell
The question asked was "Would you boycott goods—such as some rugs—that you suspected were produced by child slave labor?"

I thought this was a ridiculous poll, for who would possibly answer no? I believed that everyone would boycott slave labor produced goods, especially child slave labor goods, that the problem was more that most people aren't aware of how many of the products they buy are produced this way.

25% said NO!

Since I suspect most/all DUers would forgo goods that were produced this way, here are some links on slave labor produced products and severe sweatshop conditions that are very close to slavery.
