Six to be tried in Pa Bush thong protest

PHILADELPHIA - The American Civil Liberties Union is defending six men who were arrested during one of President Bush (news - web sites)'s visits to Pennsylvania because they stripped down to thong underwear and formed a human pyramid to protest the Abu Ghraib prison scandal in Iraq.

The six were hauled away by police and charged with disorderly conduct on July 9, shortly after piling atop each other at the side of a road carrying Bush's motorcade in Lancaster County.

The men said they were trying to shame the president by re-creating an image of naked prisoners forced to assume a similar position by U.S. soldiers.

They weren't breaking any laws and should have been left alone, said Paula Knudsen, an ACLU attorney.

1. There is not a chance in the world that this case will end in conviction
Who's the prosecutor there? He should be reprimanded by the state bar for even bringing this case forward.

2. Prolly the deadliest DA, Lynn Abraham
She loved busting nonviolent protesters at RNC 2000 too. Too bad the city (taxpayers) paid out the wazoo for damages won by everyone who was acquitted and brought up civil charges.

3. Note to self: Protest peacefully in Philadelphia...
... get busted... cash in big-time! :7

Seriously, it's just unreal that this is going forward. Complete waste of taxpayers' money -- as anyone with even a passing knowledge of free-speech caselaw ought to know.

It doesn't even work as a bullying tactic, to stifle protest in the future, if the protesters know they'll get lots of publicity by being arrested -- and THEN go on to win big cash settlements.
