WASHINGTON - The U.S. is giving civic and economic projects in Jordan, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt, and on the West Bank $18.5 million in contributions, the State Department announced Friday.
Also, the U.S. will give nearly $700,000 seven universities in Jordan for teaching English.
The contributions will come out of $220 million appropriated by Congress since 2001 under a Middle East Partnership Initiative.

"These are exciting projects that underscore our continuing commitment to supporting the peoples in the region's desire for progress ad change," the State Department deputy spokesman Adam Ereli said.
Congress passes on the amount of money and then the department decides where it is spent, Ereli said.
