Detainees Secretly Taken Out Of Iraq
At the request of the CIA, the Justice Department drafted a confidential memo that authorizes the agency to transfer detainees out of Iraq for interrogation -- a practice that international legal specialists say contravenes the Geneva Conventions.

One intelligence official familiar with the operation said the CIA has used the March draft memo as legal support for secretly transporting as many as a dozen detainees out of Iraq in the last six months. The agency has concealed the detainees from the International Red Cross and other authorities, the official said.

1. Sadly
This isn't actually "news" -- tho it may be to the august and ever so on top of things WP, eh?

But we've pretty much known about this for a lotta months. I guess I'm glad to see it in print. I think with all the election hype and hoopla, no one much will notice tho.

2. LOL I read about it shortly after the invasion, but it was on one of those

unreliable propaganda sites where all the stories are written by reporters who do not attend US military briefings :D

4. it uncovers a new category of ghost detainees
call them "spook detainees"

People removed from Iraq to be tortured elsewhere. Also check the date of the memo, March 19, 2004. They got busted at Abu Ghraib, but they wanted to continue the torture policy, so they spooked away some detainees to places where they could be tortured in greater secrecy. It's very disturbing.

3. Uzbekistan is our favorite torture chamber
But of course we don't 'condone' torture. We just use it.
