Salt Lake Tribune: Bush for president
Edited on Sun Oct-24-04 02:21 AM by Sean Reynolds
As the presidential election approaches, the American family is a house divided. Voters are split into two roughly equal camps supporting either President George W. Bush or Sen. John Kerry. This split, however, cannot be defined simply by party and poll numbers.
For beneath the deplorably poisonous partisanship that has marked this campaign, there are many thoughtful voters, including those committed to one candidate or the other, who have serious reservations about both.
The Salt Lake Tribune shares those reservations. Despite policy and personality differences that clearly separate the two men, there is no easy or obvious choice. Nevertheless, voting, like governing, is about making choices, and that is why The Tribune endorses George W. Bush for a second term as president of the United States.
Tribune readers know that this newspaper has been consistently critical of a number of the president's policies, particularly his war in Iraq, his tax cuts for the rich and his abysmal environmental record.

Fuck the Tribune. It was once a good newspaper, until the fucking whore Singleton (owner of the Denver Post) bought the paper. I'm canceling my subscription.

1. that one does not surpsrie me
that said the two major papers have endorsed Kerry (NYT and WaPo), as well as the Atlanta Journal.

I'd say we are running (by my very bad count) at least 3:1 endorsements for Kerry

2. The old Tribune would have never endorsed Bush.
Before they were sold they had the more balanced and harshest tone toward President Bush of the largest papers in the state of Utah. It prided itself as Utah's 'Independent' Voice, sadly this election season has proven they're nothing more than a Republican rag. In a majority of the races they've endorsed the Republicans.

3. Wow!!
Read between the lines: They're more uncomfortable with endorsing Kerry than supporting Bush. Why? Rapture not forthcoming under a Kerry administration?

It's like watching your house burn but not using your neighbor's water to put it out because you're not sold on that water.

5. The theme for all these Bush endorsements is comically the same:
Bush has made a mess of everything else, but we should trust him to keep us safe against terrorists.

How absolutely pathetic.

To call John Kerry "irresolute" is totally baseless, and shamefully ignores the character of a man whose history includes medals for bravery and then the conviction to denounce a senseless Vietnam War.

That endorsement deliberately distorts Kerry's consistent stance on Iraq.

What a piece of shit newspaper.

12. It would be suicide if the SL Trib were to endorse Kerry.
I'm not the least bit surprised. How ANY paper can endorse Bush after his absymal record is beyond my comprehension, but hey, they have their readership to think about. Integrity has nothing to do with it.

13. One of the most stupid columns I have ever read!
This is an endorsement? Have they lost their minds?

“the American family is a house divided

“Voters are split

“deplorably poisonous partisanship

“critical of (Bush’s) policies, ... his war in Iraq, ... tax cuts for the rich ...his abysmal environmental record.

“Bush, offers too little (some would say "no") evidence, …that he would more ably address the challenges facing this country at home and abroad. (C'mon. You can say it. Like Brent Scowcroft, James Baker, his own father, and a slew of retired Generals - Bush is not up to the job. Just say it.)

”… Bush is too disinclined to listen to dissent and study the available facts, Kerry has command of all the details

“President Bush … is running on his record as the leader who guided the nation forward from grief to resolve after the calamity of Sept. 11, 2001, declaring war on terrorism and protecting the United States from further attacks. (What was your point again about a country divided?)

“It was his blinkered determination (above you called it, “too disinclined to listen to dissent and study the available facts”) to topple Saddam Hussein that led him and the nation disastrously astray.

“The justifications for war… - thoroughly discredited.

“…old allies.. Bush has alienated unnecessarily…”

But, given all that, these idiots are “…confident our next leader will move the country forward. John Kerry has proven himself in combat and may have the right stuff to be a wartime president.”

They are merely spewing what the Salt Lakers want to hear, that's all. Newspapers are in it for the money like most things that rely on customers. These are people who vote in idiots like Moron Hatch term after damn term!

16. Their owner is friends with Bush.
The Tribune used to be owned by the Kearns family, a strong Democratic family in Utah. They sold the paper to AT&T and some how it ended in the hands of Dean Singelton (sp?) who is pals with Bush and also owns the Denver Post.

Since he bought the paper it's turned FAR to the right.

20. William Dean Singleton
he owns a shitload of papers - this endorsement looks like the one the Denver Post gave. The rumor is the editorial board wanted Kerry, but the owner (Singleton) said Bush. That could also be the case with the Tribune. It's not exactly a ringing endorsement.

It still sucks though. I spent 6 months in Utah back in the mid eighties. The Tribune was the only paper worth reading...

17. Please write a LTTE to the Salt Lake Trib
I just sent an email decrying such a stupid endorsement. To Utahns here, please do the same. If you cancel your subscription (I already have!), tell them why! Who in the SamHill do they think they are, ruining the only large-circulation independent, Democrat-leaning newspaper in the state? I'll bet you they endorse Huntsman against Matheson, too.

Traitors. Idiots.

There's no proof that Kerry will be able to correct President Bush's colossal screw ups so let's see how Bush does with another four years.

25. Another so-called "endorsement"
In compiling endorsements there should be category for these so-called endorsements.

Here is a nasty quote from the endorsement:

"It was his blinkered determination to topple Saddam Hussein that led him and the nation disastrously astray. The justifications for war - weapons of mass destruction and collaboration with al-Qaida - have been thoroughly discredited. Worse, the United States was militarily and strategically unprepared to enforce the peace in an occupied nation."
