Senators concerned about report CIA secretly removed detainees from Iraq

<snip>

WASHINGTON (AP) Leading senators expressed concern Sunday about a report that the CIA has secretly moved as many as a dozen unidentified prisoners out of Iraq in the past six months, a possible violation of international treaties.

Sen. John McCain said interrogations can help extract crucial information from detainees on plans for attacks against Americans. But international law, including the Geneva Conventions, must be followed, he said.

''These conventions and these rules are in place for a reason because you get on a slippery slope and you don't know where to get off,'' McCain, R-Ariz., told ABC's ''This Week.''

''The thing that separates us from the enemy is our respect for human rights,'' he said.

Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del., called for new leadership at the Justice Department.

9. i doubt it. mccain knows what torture is like & is appalled by US action
i watched him on that show and the pain he showed in talking about how bad this was reflected a visceral emotion to this subject. i think he would like to beat bush with a tire iron for allowing the torture of iraqi detainees by US intelligence agencies.

one of the things that sustained mccain while he spent 6 years as a pow was his belief that his side did not engage in systematic torture and that made his side morally superior to his own torturers. now he finds that under bush the US is just like those who tortured him.

3. Outsourcing torture
We pay the Uzbeks to do our torturing these days. That's why we're a beacon of freedom.

5. I have thought so for many months
About six months ago, on one of the major roads leading to the major interstates.
I happened to see two prison busses on the road, with police cars on all sides moving down the road. That is not odd in and of itself, but the busses were filled with nothing but tan skinned bearded males. Now if a move of prisoners was being made, odds are that the bus would not have such and even distribution of ethnicity. I forgot to mention that this was in Northern Florida, on a road that connects to south florida, but not widely used for long distance travel.

I started to suspect that people were beng moved out of Guantanamo to other areas of the country at that time, but moving Iraqi prisoners out could be just as likely.

8. Are these guys blind, deaf and dumb or WHAT?
Who here was surprised by this "revelation?" The ONLY surprise was that it got reported. When will Congress get it that if there's ANY law or treaty or moral or ethical restriction that gets in the way of what BushCo. want to do, they'll trash it, jump over it, ignore it, or blast it to hell and then lie through their teeth about it all, usually in Orwellian terms, like Bush: "We follow all Geneva Conventions." Yeah, right.

God, they make me angry.
