DENVER (AP) - Republican beer baron Pete Coors has donated half-a-million dollars to his Senate campaign.

The donation made Friday triggers a new law that allows his opponent, state Attorney General Ken Salazar, to raise larger donations to match Coors' personal wealth.

The law, called the millionaire amendment, was designed to make sure wealthy candidates did not have too much of an advantage in election campaigns.

Coors spokesman Cinamon Watson confirmed on Sunday that Coors had made the donation. She said the money was necessary to counter spurious attacks on Coors by extreme environmentalists and lawyers.
