A Powell farewell tour? Secretary of state denies he's a lame duck

Standing beside Japanese Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura, he told reporters in Tokyo that they had committed themselves to working on key issues "in the months ahead."

Immediately all sought to interpret: is he saying he's staying on in a possible second Bush Administration? Or by "months," is Powell hinting he could leave after as few as two months?

The only thing he's said for certain, in an interview with Japanese reporters, is that he won't serve in a Kerry administration.

"Well, if Mr. Kerry wins, I will leave....I don't expect Mr. Kerry to win. And I serve at the pleasure of President Bush."

My favorite Powell moment will be when he was on Tim Russert's show and his staffer (the one involved in the Florida 2000 fiasco) knocked the camera away because she didn't like the question, and then Colin tried to play it off by saying everything was fine! 3. I am so schizophrenic when it comes to assessing Powell...

One minute I'm ready to just discount him as a typical Repug whore with no ethics, principles, or any real moral compass. Then, I see him take a (much too late) stand on something in opposition to Bush* or read about the infighting that has cost Powell any chance of being effective and I can only wonder: WHAT HAVE THEY GOT ON HIM?????!!!

I tend to think the latter may be the closest to the truth. After all, Powell's foreign policy philosophies are certainly much closer and more likely to come to fruition under a Democratic administration. So, I guess the Repug devils truly do own his soul. The only question is what he received in exchange....

On edit, lest anyone think I'm defending Powell or seeking to justify his actions, I'm NOT. I just seek to understand him.

Bush knew Powell was popular with the general public and the very first thing he did was trot him out at the Crawford ranch to tell America..... "My first appointment will be to name Colin Powell Sec. of State". The implication was that Powell would play a major role in his administration. We all know the truth now. You'd think Powell might be a little angry at being used, if nothing else.

10. the word in St. Louis is that Jack Danforth is being considered

as Secretary of State in the next Bush term. He spoke Friday night at some rally in St. Louis at Washington University--I heard on the news that his name is being seriously considered for the job.
