LONDON (AFP) - The editor of the Guardian newspaper, long a standard-bearer for the governing Labour Party, said it might back the opposition Liberal Democrats instead at the next British general election.
"Yes, there is every chance," Alan Rusbridger told a public talk in London when asked if his newspaper -- the daily diary of Britain's left-leaning intellectuals -- would swing behind the Lib Dems.

"I think you only have to read the paper to see that we have a lot of worries about the conduct of the New Labour government" led since 1997 by Prime Minister Tony Blair (news - web sites), he said.
The Guardian has long been seen as solidly Labour, but it was strongly critical of the Iraq (news - web sites) war -- and in September it urged voters in a by-election in Hartlepool, northeast England to back the Liberal Democrats.
