Kerry: U.S. Should Unite vs. bin Laden
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=694&ncid=703&e=4&u=/ap/20041030/ap_on_el_pr/kerry

APPLETON, Wis. - Presidential challenger John Kerry (news - web sites) urged voters on Saturday not to allow the videotaped message from Osama bin Laden (news - web sites) to stir up partisan feelings.

"As Americans we are absolutely united, all of us. There are no Democrats, there are no Republicans," Kerry said. "As Americans we are united in our determination to destroy, capture, kill Osama bin Laden and all of the terrorists. They are barbarians, and we are going to hunt them down and we will make America safe."

Kerry did not dwell on the new message from the al-Qaida leader, other than to repeat his charge that President Bush (news - web sites) allowed bin Laden to escape in the Afghan mountains in late 2001. He concentrated his final weekend appeal on voters who have suffered under Bush's economic and military leadership.

"In three days, a woman or a husband is going to walk into that polling booth and they're going to think about their spouse that left to go to Iraq (news - web sites) months ago, maybe close to a year ago," Kerry said. "And they're going to wonder how long that spouse is going to have to stay in Iraq, and the kids are going to be wondering, 'Daddy, Mommy, when are you coming home? Are you coming home?'"

Kerry said his election will give soldiers in Iraq "the leadership and the hope that they need and to get them home."

2. Why unite?
Why should we unite? Because of a videotape?

4. Osama is a bad producer
Osama is a bad producer of film for which he should be punished. But he is not going after France who mind their own business.

6. WMD not WMC
We are supposed to be looking for Weapons of Mass Destruction not Weapons of Mass Construction.

5. I really loved this part when I heard it on Randi Rhodes yesterday...
"As Americans we are absolutely united, all of us. There are no Democrats, there are no Republicans..."

I have been saying that something must be done to heal the rift in this country, a rift which is dangerous for all of us in so many ways (and one which would, at the very least, significantly hinder his presidency).

I wanted Kerry to be able to take steps toward this unifcation. I don't mean to roll over for the other side, but to bring everyone together again. To avoid doing what Bush did after his inauguration (even before his inauguration). I thought this statement was a sign of hope.

7. So did I.
It's great to hear a *gasp* leadership statement, where a feeling is conveyed of positive strength and unity, rather than fear and insecurity.

8. That's how a true leader speaks...
It's going to be such a welcome change to have a real leader in the White House!
