Support for Arcata resolution targeting Bush (impeachment) looks strong
http://www.times-standard.com/Stories/0,1413,127%257E2896%257E1607983,00.html

ARCATA -- Although three of the first four speakers opposed the impeachment resolution, a clear majority of people who spoke at Tuesday night's town meeting were, as one resident put it: "preaching to the choir."

The overwhelming consensus of those who spoke during the two-hour gathering said the City Council should pass Councilman Dave Meserve's resolution calling for the impeachment of President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard Cheney.

<snip>

Bush was called "a liar," "a war monger" and "a murderer."

The president was accused of waging war in Iraq for oil, passing tax cuts for the rich while beefing up the military and stealing the 2000 presidential election.

One man said the Arcata Police Department should issue an arrest warrant for Bush.

I really love Arcata. Not only is it one of the most beautiful areas of North America, but the people there are awesome. Way to go, Arcata! (Please let me know if you need software engineers there... I would love in a heartbeat.) :bounce:

5. This kind of thing kinda paints the recall effort in a weird light...
I mean, if people are that pissed off at a repub president in that state, then where does Darrell Issa, Schwarzenegger, et. al. get off telling residents to recall their Democrat governor? Is the effort to recall Davis a REAL effort? Admittedly, Cali is a big, diverse state, but....

6. It's the thought that counts
The voters have to take control of the situation, even if only symbolically. Way to go, Acarta--let the politicians know that you're not going to be pushed around any longer!!!

8. not to brag or anything...
...but to my knowledge Arcata is also the only city in the U.S. which has actually made it ILLEGAL for municipal authorities to cooperate with state and federal law enforcement acting under the USA PATRIOT act. It's a $50 fine (or something close to that). Symbolic, but a powerful statement that goes far beyond the usual resolution expressing displeasure with loss of civil liberties, etc. A very active, liberal, activist community. I feel very fortunate to have washed up here.

They are still pissed off about Ashcrack busting the glass blowers up here, not that I blame them.

Seen a few Kucinich for President in '04 stickers on cars up this way as well, amidst all the the timber-loving rednecks! LOL!

11. Arcata is a liberal town, in the best sense
of the word, like Madison Wisconsin. Humboldt State University is there and College of the Redwoods is nearby. So is the infamous Mendocino triple junction, where the Pacific Plate, the Gorda Plate, and the North American Plate interact. Ecotopia with hippies and loggers, sort of.

12. you forgot - the San Andreas Fault!
It runs right up this way direct from San Francisco! They get some big quakes up here but you never hear about them for some reason. There was one a couple of weeks ago that woke me up in the middle of the night - a 5.1 out at sea was the word.

Arcata is a college town basically. When school is out, it leaves a very depressed economy and there is no work to be found around here most of the time.

So goes it. Its a nice enough place to live in any event! :D

16. Green Party majority on council,
I know that at one time and possible presently, there was a Green Party majority on the council. I do think there is a positive role for lower-level Green Party and other leftist elected officials. I think that in some cases, it would be advisable for Democrats to step aside and support a minor party candidate. We need some people to say some controversial things and not be in the Democratic Party. This impeachment resolution is such a case.
