Bush Sees 'Opening for Peace' with Palestinians
He also sees a record federal surplus and says with his economic policies everyone will be a millionaire.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - With Yasser Arafat (news - web sites) near death, President Bush said on Wednesday he saw an opening for negotiating peace with a new Palestinian leadership, declaring: "I think we've got a chance."

Bush, who sidelined the long-time Palestinian leader as an obstacle to peace in the Middle East, said his administration may be prepared to offer assistance to shore up Palestinian institutions, though he offered no details.

Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) said U.S. help would depend on whether new Palestinian leadership emerges to rein in terrorism.

Bush is expected to send a senior American diplomat, Assistant Secretary of State Williams Burns, and possibly others, to Arafat's funeral, sources said.

1. And there's going to be a lovely, peaceful Palestinian state, too.
Wonder if it will have Jerusalem as its capital?

6. Heh-heh, wouldn't THAT be a fine howdy-doo for Robertson! I'm
thinking that's not going to happen, but who knows what lurks around in that empty space between Shrub's ears.

2. In other words, * and Israel war against Palestine once Arafat is dead?
SOrry, after 4 years of *, I find it difficult to believe a word he says.

And, no details? Gee, that sounds familiar... I bet he will war against Palestine.

9. I read today that Suha Arrafat
will get a pension form the Palestinian Authority of $22 Million per year. This they can afford? Maybe they'll want to find out if Arafat was poisoned and who did it to talk to them about a way to save $22 million a year.

5. Why do you think Ashcroft resigned?
"Johnny boy, I've got a heck of a big job for you."

Perhaps someone should tell W. that his mandate doesn't include being able to appoint Arafat's successor.

the Prince of Peace.

I heard this news on NPR on the way home from work. This was my first thought.
