Veterans kept the military's secret, some until death

After chemical tests revealed, redress promised

November 11, 2004

-snip-

If ever an Army unit was poised for excellence, it was the 1st Chemical Casual Company.

Mostly young science buffs, the soldiers of 1st Chemical had been culled from science programs across the country for chemical warfare training. But they soon learned that their value to the Army was more as lab rats than lab scientists.

They were shipped to Edgewood and herded into chambers to test how long uniforms, ointments and gas masks could withstand chemicals that might be unleashed in combat. When the experiments ended two months later, some, like Felgendreger, would gain Bronze Stars and Purple Hearts overseas, or embark on estimable careers in science, medicine or academia.

more, lots more ...

1. What a horrible story
I've also just been reading Vanity Fair's article about the us of DU in weapons and its affect on soldiers and civilians who come in contact with it, and of how the Pentagon and VA lie in their teeth about what this stuff is doing.
We truly are a rogue nation for using this stuff, and for using troops as guinea pigs in the past.

2. They did the same thing in atomic testings....
In the S. Pacific tests. My father was there. He said during one of the tests they had all the soldiers line up on the beach and remove their shirts and turn their backs to the explosion (which immediately screamed "more surface area for exposure" to me.).

He's being paid disability from the military now.

3. My entire boot camp company
were flat on our backs in bed for 3 days in '79 after they tested an experimental flu vaccine on us. One guy got typhoid fever(106 temp) and had to be medically discharged with brain damage.

Happy Veterans Day. :grr:

13. It's really quite common,
most of us appreciated the 3 days off. :)

I know it sounds insane, but is it any more insane than bombing the suburbs of Baghdad?

14. somehow it seems more insane to me to be doing this to our own
people. I am against animal experimentation too. If any one wants to be in a clinical trial, fine.

4. The best argument against 'conspiracy theory'
is that you can't keep something big, and involving so many people, secret.

But apparently you can

5. This continues today, with Anthrax vaccine...
And with the Anthrax vaccine:

Read our story (which got really limited play, it's so sad):

http://www.bluelemur.com/index.php?p=351

While a judge blocked the vaccine's use without consent, it's only a matter of time before these experiments begin again.

11. I am so anti-vaccine it isn't funny. I have seen bad reactions in
people who had flu vaccines and also my pets getting all those useless vaccines. One of my cats died from vaccines, hypervaccination, cancer. Doctors and vets love vaccines as a way of making more money and getting you in there for an office charge. Everyone: THINK twice and read up on vaccines, google adverse drug reactions for people and pets before you ever do any vaccine again.

7. Shocked but not surprised. These doctors are no better
than the doctors that carried out experiments on concentration camp prisoners. I guess they leave their conscience behind when they get their medical license.

The way this country (and the other countries mentioned in the article) treat their military is heartbreaking. They sign up to defend their country, or are drafted, and then used as guinea pigs and denied treatment or special compensation. When will it ever end.

12. I just talked to a friend who was in the military during the Vietnam
era and he told me that the VA doesn't treat those guys anymore if they weren't in the system. That is, if you never used VA up til 2 years ago, you aren't going to use the VA now. My friend always had medical insurance til 1 year ago and when he went to get some treatment a few months ago at VA he wasn't in the system. The rule changed 2 years ago and he said a lot of vets are really screaming about it. They always thought VA was a backup as it always used to be til 2 yrs. ago. We should have the best hospitals for ALL vets. No vet should ever be without the best treatment available. What the fuck is going on in this country?

15. what caught my eye is this
"Upon the report's release, the Defense Department quickly accepted the recommendations, apologized, and pledged to help the VA find the men."

This is so not like the DoD/VA; they dragged their feet on agent orange, gulf war syndrome, DU syndrome, to name a few. You have to figure there must have been a reason for the rush to hush this thing. What? Why?
We are also told
"...Porter Goss, a Florida congressman. Goss, who is now CIA director, lobbied colleagues in Congress to compensate Schnurman and other World War II chemical volunteers for their illnesses." Goss before being a congressman worked for the CIA, so i figure he knew what was going on.
my thin-foil-hat-theory is that this type of testing is still going on. jeez.
