UN Security Council to hold first talks on new US resolution on Iraq


UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - The UN Security Council, riven by differences over Iraq, is to hold its first consultations on a new US resolution seeking a multinational force in Iraq, the council's president said.

France and Germany have already expressed opposition to the new resolution but Emyr Jones Parry, the UN ambassador for Britain, which has the presidency of the Security Council in September, said he hoped for a rapid vote.

Jones Parry said that as Britain's representative he found the resolution "rather a good text" but as president he could not comment.

Diplomats arriving at the UN headquarters Thursday appeared largely upbeat.

"It's a significant step in the right direction," said Mexican ambassador Adolfo Aguilar Zinser, while his Chilean counterpart, Heraldo Munoz, said it was "a positive step, even if we don't know if it is enough."
