Texas cobbler killed while working in Iraq
Saturday November 13, 2004
DENISON, Texas (AP) A Texas cobbler whose 90-year-old Illinois father took over his business when he went to Iraq to help train police has been killed there.

Mike Tatar, 52, was killed late this week in Iraq. He was scheduled to return home in July after his yearlong mission.
(snip)

Walter Tatar had moved from his home in Champaign, Ill., to run his son's business Wayne's Shoe Repair on Main Street.
(snip)

Holder said Tatar had been working for the private U.S. security firm DynCorp. Officials with the company told the family Friday about Tatar's death. Holder said the family would be given more details today.

So people like this man are NOT counted with the numbers of soldiers KIA, right?

Where would we find the totals for the other Americans killed in Bush's bogus war?

Adding odd item you might find interesting, or wry, which is too small to fit in anywhere else:
State's gesture a slight to Oregon's veterans

November 13, 2004

Let me see if I have this straight. The state of Oregon, by approval of the Legislature, has generously decided that disabled vets and active duty military personnel may park free at state parks on one cold, foggy day in November.

What a wonderful benevolent gift! Maybe next session they can approve a free pass to the state's recycle sites.

2. Thanks, jmatthan. Very interesting.
We don't hear a lot about these other people. Disturbing. They should be publicised as well, as they are also human beings.

Makes you wonder if Bush would rather we NOT know how many people outside official armed forces he is responsible for sending there.

3. human beings? Yes. War profiteers? also yes.
I think its disturbing that we so often talk about the deaths of troops and war profiteers and not mention the horrific casualties of innocent Iraqis: babies, children, pregnant women, elderly, etc. Every soul in Iraq who died because a "smart" bomb dropped on their house instead of intended target, every soul in Iraq who died because they couldn't get to the hospital to get their cancer treatment, every soul in Iraq who died because the electricity no longer worked and so their insulin spoiled, every soul in Iraq who died because they couldn't get help when bleeding to death during childbirth because of a USA imposed curfew--these deaths are all a stain on the hands of * and on each American who has to shoulder the blame for keeping him in Office.

And so your plea that a war profiteer is a human being doesn't really mean that much when placed in the scenario of wholesale death and destruction on an innocent people.

6. Apparently you don't read for depth.
I have never expressed pity for dead war profiteers or mecenaries.

I was questioning the information which has been deliberately withheld while Bush conducts his own private war, using U.S. citizens' taxes as his own bankroll, completely keeping us helpless, and in the dark.

Please don't hesitate to impugn me again, if you believe it's going to advance your case.

10. You have "impugned" yourself.
You are the one who posted postive stuff about war profiteers, who I think are just about 2 levels below pond scum in the evolutionary chain. I have a right to disagree with you, and I thought I did it quite nicely, but if you want to attack me, then go right ahead. Feel better? Good.

9. Does it have to be an either/or thing?
Or are we allowed to regret *all* of the deaths caused by this unnecessary war?

5. Same story, with photo of this Dyncorp. person:
(snip)
Mr. Tatar also worked in law enforcement for two decades. Ms. Holder said he served in many positions, including sheriff and prison guard.

Ms. Holder said Mr. Tatar had been working for the private U.S. security firm DynCorp.

Officials with the company told the family at noon Friday about Mr. Tatar's death. Ms. Holder said the family would be given more details today.

Relatives planned to gather in Colbert, Okla., on Saturday, she said. He will be buried in Denison, but no funeral plans had been made.

8. Calling him a cobbler seems like propaganda
It makes you think of Jeppatto (Pinocchio's dad), busy in his workshop (or some scene to that effect). Once you find out he was in law enforcement, a prison guard, etc., his employment as a mercenary makes much more sense.

But mercenaries don't get the sympathy that cobblers do.

11. you're right that is propaganda
Because the first thing that came to mind is, what type of shoe shop was he running in Iraq? Then when it was obvious he was not running a shoe shop, and he was actually a mercenary....

It is too bad people think going to Iraq as a mercenary looks that lucrative. Makes me wonder if he supported the chimp....

12. You know, you're right! It was the "cobbler" thing that caused me to read
it, in the first place! I'm certain you're on to something. Psy-ops, and all.....

It would surely fit the way the thing is written, as well. He, as so many others we have read about, was ALSO the most loving person on the face of the earth. They stress that repeatedly this war, in stories about the fallen in Iraq, don't they? First war I've ever seen that happen. So many, many lovable characters getting clipped.

Too bad Dubya doesn't see how lovable they all are and end his nasty attack on Iraqi citizens.
