Delaware News Op Ed on Biden and Carper re bankruptcy bill -
'Liberal' Democrats bend until they resemble Republicans
By AL MASCITTI 03/10/2005

Delaware, as anyone who follows politics can tell you, has voted increasingly Democratic in recent years. But that doesn't mean its voters, or the people they elect, have gotten more liberal.

The truth is, too much of the state's prosperity is built on its indulgent attitude toward big business for liberalism or populism to ever gain the upper hand. From incorporation laws that shield the identities of owners, to corporate courts that favor business executives over stockholders, to banking laws that legalized usury, much of Delaware's sound financial footing comes from looking the other way for corporate interests. And nobody in our three-person congressional delegation, whichever party they belong to, is about to forget that.

(snip)

"In plainer terms, they were protecting Delaware's pole position in the race to the bottom.

So next time you hear some talk-radio blowhard going on about how liberal our elected officials are, the proper response is, "Compared to what?"

3. They cave to the banking industry who is continuing to move jobs AWAY!
Citigroup and MBNA are continuing to move jobs away from Delaware!

The transferred jobs represent about 20 percent of Citigroup's total Delaware work force of 2,000 and about 70 percent of the people who work for the bank's credit card unit in the state,

(snip)

MBNA in January said it wants to cut 1,000 jobs through a companywide voluntary early retirement and severance program. MBNA, the state's No. 1 private employer, cited an industrywide slowdown for the cutbacks.

The credit card banking sector, long one of the state's key industries, has been shedding jobs. Delaware's total credit card bank employment fell by about 6 percent last year.....
