How to buy votes from the Geneva Human Rights Commission
S everybody knows, last year Honduras presented a resolution condemning Cuba that was drafted by the United States and approved by the 60th Geneva Human Rights Committee (HRC) by just one vote.

. . .

In its attempt to impose that anti-Cuban resolution at any cost, formal and informal U.S. representatives resorted to all types of threats and pressure on the Commission’s member countries.

They reminded various Central American governments that they could deport hundreds of thousands of their émigrés who are working in the United States and cancel family remittances to their countries of origin.

In regards to certain African countries, they threatened to deprive them of the benefits of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) a US law that enables African exports to enter the US market.

They tried to pressure other countries in other regions by subjecting them to other forms of intimidation.

1. I've heard about this Zúñiga case. It was typically godawful....
From the article:
Perhaps the most controversial example was Washington’s decision to appoint Cuban citizen Luis Zúñiga as a member of its delegation to the Commission’s 60th session.

In August, 1974, Zúñiga Rey was detained and sentenced by the courts for illegally entering Cuba from the United States, loaded with explosives and arms, as part of a CIA operation in which he planned to carry out several terrorist actions. After his release and return to the United States, he took over the paramilitary activities of the Cuban-American National Foundation, and became involved in organizing and financing bomb attacks on hotels in Havana and in other terrorist actions against Cuban hospitals during the 90’s.

The report of the special raconteur over the use of mercenaries at the 56th session of the HRC, revealed that Zúñiga Rey recruited Guatemalan citizen Percy Francisco Alvarado Godoy, to reconnoiter vulnerable and susceptible points for terrorist attacks in Cuba, such as hotels, thermoelectical plants and oil refineries.

Zúñiga Rey took part in the debates at the 60th session of the HRC, speaking on behalf of none other than the country that claims a commitment to combating terrorism.
(snip/...)
Sad, isn't it?
