One of the most respected figures in the Republican political establishment turned on his own party yesterday, accusing the leadership of falling hostage to the religious right.

In an opinion piece in yesterday's New York Times, John Danforth, a former senator and US ambassador to the United Nations, writes: "Republicans have transformed our party into the political arm of conservative Christians."

1. This is the part where they need another war or even a greater scapegoat

than France, the UN or Dean. They need something huge to keep the religious right's eye off the ball that got dropped ELECTION NIGHT. They have kissed their asses big time over TS (a terrible case of vague rumors and nothing carved in stone). But it will not be enough. The religious right has not yet figured out that the Repukes DON"T WANT THE WEDGE ISSUES TO BE SOLVED - they need the same mix of issues for the next election and the next election after that?
