Guardian Unlimited | Special Reports | Profile: Paul Krugman
http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/story/0,12271,1045302,00.html

Paul Krugman is a mild-mannered university economist. He is also a New York Times columnist and President Bush's most scathing critic. Hence the death threats. He talks to Oliver Burkeman.

3. Krugman?
Paul Krugman is my hero period

As an MBA, I think there are far too few voices on the left that no how Republicans think and strategize. Krugman sees right through it and calls them on it. I actually fear for his life because he is that powerful, only getting more so.

5. why does the media even give the r-w the time of day?
Krugman says of the press and the bush lies:

"By inclination and training, they (the press) always try to see two sides to an issue, and find it hard even to conceive that a major political figure is simply lying."

I've never understood why the press gave these lies (arguments, to the R-W) are even given any time. By all rights, they should be laughed off the set or dropped from the newspaper story. But no, not only did the press fail to expunge these liars--they did even worse! They fell, hook, line and sinker, for the lies and sleaze promoted by the right against Clinton. They glorified it. They made it the story of the year and they pursued it every minute of the day. They tied up the government with nothing else for an entire year and when September 11 rolled around, 3000 people died because our government was obsessed with a stupid blue dress instead of a genuine threat to its citizens.

6. FAir & Balanced
Regarding your comments, Krugman makes an excellent commentary in this article:

http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/politics/politics-politics-columnist.html

``There's a confusion between objectivity and even-handedness, they are not the same thing,'' Krugman said. ``If Bush said the earth was flat, the reports in the mainstream media would say, 'Shape of the Earth: Views Differ.'''

7. The same thought has occured to me
Maybe the members of the press aren't a bunch of media whores sucking up to a fascit junta that works for the same multinational corporations that employ them as "journalists". Maybe they're just confounded and don't know how to deal with such blantant lying.

On the other hand, these same fascists put Ann Coulter and Rush Limgaugh on the air as if they had some sort of intellectual legitimacy they don't really have. Ms. Coulter and Mr. Limbaugh aren't journalists, either; they're liars, just like Bush, Chenney, Powell and Rumsfeld. They need to be taken off the air.

However, as long as Paul Krugman graces the pages of the New York Times, the fight for America cannot be totally lost.

8. Al Franken's book
Maybe the book's not just funny--maybe proving it, as Franken has done with his meticulous investigation into their sources in Lying Liars and the Lies They Tell and Paul Krugman pointing out the difference in objectivity and even-handedness will make a difference.

If you don't think so, think about this: just yesterday bush said there is no connection between Iraq and 9/11. The pRezident of the United States tells the truth and it makes the front cover of The New York Times!

And Cheney took a lot of heat for lying last Sunday. There were two articles about the lies in the WP and NY Times.

The jig's up, liars!!

Sen Wellstone also went against the Rethugs, who (per their usual practice) threatened to kill him. And then he had a very unfortunate "accident".

Rethugs routinely threaten to kill people -- from JFK onwards. Then -- when JFK or RFK or MLK or Wellstone do get killed, the Rethugs are shocked, shocked that any of us might think they had anything to do with it.

Rethugs both threaten and commit murder. And the threats alone are more than enough answer to those who cry "conspiracy theory" to deny what has been going on at least from 1963 onwards.
