Bush Silent As Top Terrorist Seeks US Asylum

"If you harbor terrorists, you are a terrorist," were the words used by President George W. Bush in justifying the invasion of Afghanistan three-and-a-half years ago and launching the campaign of worldwide militarism known as the global war on terror.

But the Bush administration is itself harboring a notorious terrorist, wanted for the mid-flight bombing of a Cuban civilian airliner as well as other deadly attacks on civilian targets and attempted assassinations.

The terrorist in question is Luis Posada Carriles, a CIA-trained Cuban exile who slipped quietly across the US-Mexican border last month and is now formerly applying for political asylum in the United States.

Yet the Bush Administration, in the face of demands from the govts of both Cuba and Venezuela for Posada Carriles's extradition to face charges of international terrorism and murder, has remained totally silent. It has made no move to take the terrorist into custody and is, in every sense of the word, harboring him. Apparently he has spent the past two weeks negotiating his status with US immigration officials and the Department of Homeland Security.

Posada Carriles is still considered a fugitive from justice in Venezuela, where he escaped from prison after being sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for having organized the 1976 terrorist bombing of a Cuban civilian airliner flying from Bermuda to Venezuela. All 73 people on board were killed. Stating that Venezuela was stepping up its demands for extradition, Vice President Jose Vincente Rangel told the press, "I hope Mr. Bush will take note of its own anti-terrorism policies and hand over Posada Carriles."

15. Yes, indeed. For Republicans,there are only exceptions to the laws

which were written for the rest of us. If this guy furthers their purpose, if he has even been called the equivalent of the Jackal, there's no problem, since he has only killed people somehow connected to socialists or merely "leftists," even though the connection is almost impossible to grasp, as in the cases of the young school children from Guyana he murdered on the Cubana airliner, it's going to thrill Republicans. (Love embryos, hate conscious people with different political views.)

Washington -- AN ACCUSED mass-murdering terrorist has sneaked into the United States illegally and is skulking around at large. He is suspected of blowing up a civilian airliner in flight, directing a string of hotel bombings and plotting to kill a head of state. He's already escaped from prison once. You'd expect the Bush administration to ramp up to Threat Level Red, set the whole Homeland Security Department's hair on fire, rush Dick Cheney back to his lonely bunker, scour the countryside until the bad guy is found and then advise the warden at Guantanamo to expect a new guest.

But no, it turns out that this is the drill only when the suspect's name is Mohammed. When his name is Luis Posada, and he's Cuban, and his alleged terrorist career was aimed at toppling or killing Fidel Castro, the procedure is different. You do nothing but wait patiently for him to surface and apply for political asylum. Oh, and you try to gauge the impact on presidential brother Jeb Bush and the rest of the Republican Party in Florida.

Posada goes by the unlikely nickname of "Bambi." His lawyer held a news conference Wednesday in Miami to confirm the rumors that Posada had sneaked across the Mexico-Texas border and was applying for asylum.

Discrediting a story by citing the source is a tried and true tactic. Think of all the freepers who make similar jibes about articles that appear in the NY Times or on CBS News?

Believe me, I'm about as centrist a Democrat as you can find anywhere. But some stories are too hot for the mainstream press (or certain blogs for that matter), and can only be found on the fringes.

And if the Arabic press picks up on this, will you get on board then?

Those of us who have been following the story of these men who have been in prison in Panama, while Miami Cuban "exile" talk radio stations collected money for their defence, while the evidence was tampered with, throwing the charges into a less severe category, and ultimately the President of Panama pardoned them, and called the Cuban "exile" leaders in Miami telling them they were getting out, all five days prior to her leaving office, are more than concerned about what _{George Bush} is going to do about this, considering his long, long association with Cuban "exile" extremists, as well as his brother _Jeb and his _father, going all the way back to BEFORE the Bay of Pigs.

This is only one part of a large, filthy, ongoing story, and there's every reason in the world some of us want to know exactly what _Bush is going to try to do about this man. We are all more than aware that his _dad gave an administrative pardon to the OTHER terrorist who colluded with Posada Carriles in engineering the bombing of the Cubana airliner and killing all 73 people, including many teenagers on board.

Maybe they'll wait it out until Bush leaves and gives him an executive pardon just like Bosch.
