Fear as Togo prepares for polls
By Mark Dummett
BBC News, Lome

<snip> The elections follow the surprise death in February of "the Father of the Nation" Gnassingbe Eyadema after 38 years in power, and a failed attempt by the military to install his son Faure Gnassingbe in his place.

The regional body, Ecowas, led by Nigeria, blocked that move, and imposed sanctions to make sure Togo's 2.3 million voters have the final say. <snip>

The opposition say many of their supporters have not received voter cards, and that more time is needed to make sure everything is free and fair. <snip>
