Endless Iraq occupation: how many lives per gallon?

May 3, 2005—The Terri Schiavo affair and the pope's passing served a useful diversionary purpose for Washington warmongers. Let's get our attention back to the empire-building oil grab that we, the American people, have an abiding duty to end.

Now into the Iraq fiasco's third year, it's admitted there were never any weapons of mass destruction. We also know George W. Bush is not the son who'll tote the gun, just as he hasn't attended any funerals of American kids he needlessly sent off to die.

Perpetual conflict? Endless occupation? How many lives per gallon?

As of this writing, nearly 1,600 of our troops have been killed and many thousands more severely wounded. Untold numbers require emotional treatment for post-traumatic stress. Tomorrow that grim tally will increase.

A single insistence emanating from the American heartland must begin to echo loudly through corridors of misguided power:

Curiously, though, most mainstream DEMs ( the ones who supported the war... and even some who opposed it) seem unconcerned with this issue.

4. Remember the window of opportunity?

Remember all that bullshit around nine months ago when the talking point of the month was the "window of opportunity"? It was of course, a thinly veiled effort to keep people from thinking what an unmitigated disaster the war had become. It touted some kind bright democratic secular future for Iraq. Now, by anyone's measure that window has slammed shut. One of these days this country will collectively realize that Iraq is not going to be the next American colony. We are, rightly despised by the vast majority of Iraqi's who are not on the US payroll. The real question is, what kind of of a mess we are going to leave behind when we finally pick up our marbles and go home?

8. The irony of it is that it can only get worse

The impotency of Congress and the whorish patriotic claptrap prevent any meaningful policy decisions at this point.

The last appropriations bill for the war went through without so much as a whimper by Democratic representatives.

Except for a small minority who have been speaking out against this war in the House from the beginning, democratic decision makers have been deplorable on the war.
