3. I've worked in smoke-free workplaces for almost 15 years . . .
And I wasn't a nonsmoker when my office went smokefree in 1991. I approve of nonsmoking offices.

However, to not hire because someone smokes tobacco is highly discriminatory. Do these firms also refuse to hire people who go to MacDonalds' every day and are likely to die earlier? How about those who drink and drive? How about those who are pissed off all the time and likely to be incapacitated by stroke and be very expensive to maintain until they die?

Until all humans live blameless, vice-free lives (I ain't holding my breath), it seems both preposterous and impractical to base hiring decisions on lifestyle choices that are not actually illegal.

5. I think it's great that they're out in the open with this!
If they are so discriminatory with the smoking bit, I already know it's a place I wouldn't want to work for many other demands that I'm SURE exist but aren't being publicized!

6. Lying with statistics can be so much fun,...as Prof. Sigelman shows us.
Democrats = lots of elderly voters, more minorities, and more of those in the lower economic class, thus they must be more "sickly, suicidal, and anti-social" because of their political beliefs, right? :eyes:

8. Ridiculous!
Statistical likelihood of certain behaviors could also very easily be used as an excuse to avoid hiring people based on age, race, religion, or gender. Have we learned nothing?

9. He's right, y'know...
I've been thinking about this passage clearly, let's look at some of these Democrats who prove his point...

"more prone to anti-social behavior" - Samantha Smith, Fred Phelps, G. Gordon Liddy (ex-con), Phillip Crane (bonked a page), Byron de la Beckworth (well... he coulda been Dixiecrat), Timothy McVeigh, John Darbyshire (fantasizes about the death of Chelsea Clinton), * (blew up frogs as a youth), Bob Dornan (wifebeater), Pat Buchanan (prone to fistfights aa a youth, Bill O'Reilly, Michael Moriarty (barroom brawls), * twins (underrage drinking), James Brown (wifebeater)

"more prone to self-destructive behavior" - G. Gordon Liddy (handburning to impress his dates), *, Ann Coulter (nicotine diet), Rush Limbaugh, Michael Moriarty (booze), Noelle * (drug addict), Betty Ford, James Brown, Kelsey Grammar, Bill Bennett (gambling)

"more likely to have been shot at, robbed or burglarized" - Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford, James Brady, Oliver North, Bob Dole

"More of them see X-rated movies" - Clarence Thomas, Jenna Jameson, Jimmy Swaggart (by extension), GanGuck (you don't think?)

"more of them smoke" - William F. Buckley, Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, Walter Williams

"they're less likely to be married and more likely to have separated or divorced" - Newt Gingrich, Bob Dole, Jim Bakker, Naomi & Wynonna Judd, Bruce Willis, Rush Limbaugh, Jack Ryan, Ronald Reagan, Clint Eastwood, Armstrong Williams, Ann Coulter, Matt Drudge, Brittany Spears, Michael Savage Weiner, John Engler, Phil Gramm, George F. Will, Dick Armey, Bob Barr, John Warner, Rudy Giuliani, Alphonse D'Amato, et al.

(Did I mention today how much I HATE these people?)

Democrats -- compared with Republicans -- on average are less affluent, more unhappy, more prone to anti-social behavior, more prone to self-destructive behavior, and more likely to have been shot at, robbed or burglarized. More of them see X-rated movies, more of them smoke, and they're less likely to be married and more likely to have separated or divorced.

Let's see some data asshole, or is it the same data they have on "Intelligent Design"?

On Edit: It is satire, isn't it? Please tell me its satire.

15. those traits are almost certainly explained better by "less affluent"
Edited on Sun May-08-05 04:39 PM by enki23
than be "votes democrat." that is, i would bet my next year's wages that the variance, for most if not all of those traits, is determined more by level of affluence than by voting patterns. i don't have a whole lot of stats in my background, but i'm not an idiot either.

the less affluent members of society are more unhappy, more prone to anti-social behavior, more prone to self-destructive behavior, more likely to have been shot at, robbed or burglarized. more of them smoke. more of them vote democratic.

17. I do believe that this is intended to be ironic or tongue-in-cheek
While Larry Elder is a libertarian, this usually means more personal freedom and less government, etc. I went to his website and read his 10 things to "fix America." While I hardly agree with all of them, none of them indicate denying people their basic rights -- it's more a survivalists' mantra of "survival of the fitest," let all weak ones die. He would cut the federal budget by 80%, eliminate corporate taxes, eliminate all forms of welfare aid, remove drug laws, etc.
