SHIELDS: Al, the late U.S. Senator Paul H. Douglas of Illinois is my personal hero. Following Pearl Harbor, when he was both a University of Chicago professor and a Chicago alderman, Paul Douglas enlisted as a private in the United States Marines. He was twice wounded in combat against the Japanese, won the Bronze Star at Okinawa.

Heroic? When he enlisted to fight, Paul Douglas was 50 years old.

Today, the all-volunteer Army has an acute shortage of volunteers. One solution? Let's have a Paul Douglas brigade, so all the tough guy neocons who deliberately avoided the draft in their own youth, could fill those gaps in Iraq.

I've thought of writing a C&W song called "Walk Your Talk" which addresses this issue-being C&W, it would appeal to the very people who are often hoodwinked by this Administration.

Toby Keith, Charlie Daniels(he ain't too old to shut off his mouth), all the female singers who trashed the Dixie Chicks(or remained silent when others did). I'd like to see all these blood thirsty pukes toting an M16, walking a post.

2. Let's not forget their children either. And since recruiters are

being thrown off of "regular" college campuses, force recruiters to concentrate on conservative, right-wing colleges. And a membership in the young repuklicans should come with a mandatory 3 year hitch.

All these war-monger are very willing to send everyone else and their kids to fight their war...but not go themselves or send their kids.
Remember the look on the Congressman's face in Fahrenheit911 when Michael Moore suggested that he send his son to fight in Iraq? That is exactly how they all feel. That is what Chickenhawks are all about.
That is why the idea of a draft scares them so much. Let all the Bush-lovers be equally liable to have to go fight in this mess, or have to send their kids, and see how enthusiastic their support will be then.
I am always curious about those people standing around at peace protests, or calling in to talk shows shouting about how great the war is...why are they here mouthing off, and not in Iraq fighting for what they believe?
