Iraq: Year Zero

By Luciana Bohne
Online Journal Contributing Writer

September 23, 2003—One of the most ill-considered charges to level at the Bush administration is the claim that it did not plan for the aftermath of the attack on Iraq. That is completely unfair!

As confirmed by the wording of the pompous Plan for the New American Century and other poli-sci-fi fantasies spluttered in countless rivulets of neocon dribble by the Bush zealots in their various lairs at para-governmental agencies and right-wing think tanks across DC, the Bush war-party's seizure of Iraq planned for the dismemberment of the state and the privatization of its wealth.

In this, they have succeeded. Bush, himself told us; he's not for nation-building.

What they hadn't expected is the type of sustained resistance activity like the one that sabotaged the northern oil pipe from Kirkuk last week. This came at a time when the Bush gang was announcing that oil production was steadying at 1.5 million barrels per day, down 500,000 from Saddam's sanction-crippled production but nowhere near the US oil profiteers' coveted potential of 6 million per day!
What they hadn't expected was that the number of troops wounded or killed in action would increase by 35 percent in August, at the rate of 10 troops injured or killed per day in that month.
What they hadn't expected was the alarming spate of ambushes, coordinated with follow-up shooting attacks that littered the streets of Khaldya, Fallujah, Baghdad, and other locations with the US dead last week—underreported by military sources. The US military command is wrapping its casualties in a burqa of silence.
