Doctors discover "mensturating" male teenager
http://in.rediff.com/news/2005/jun/20boy.htm

"M Chhaya in Kolkata | June 20, 2005 18:12 IST

In an extremely unusual case, a Kolkata doctor is treating a teenage boy who has been showing symptoms of menstruation.

The 15-year-old 'effeminate' boy's bleeding has been occurring in the second week of every month and lasts three days. During the period he experiences stomach aches, cramps, nausea and mood swings.

<snip>

Doctors, who say this is a very rare case but not unprecedented, are now planning chromosomal and hormonal tests on the boy.

"The presence of female functional endometrial in a male prostrate gland can cause this type of anomaly," said Pradip Mitra of the West Bengal Gynaecological Society.

"The boy needs immediate medical attention or else this could cause fatal complications," Mitra warned."

7. Rectum? The story said something about the prostate gland,
so maybe he's bleeding from the rectum?

12. Obviously this is a weird case, involving deformities...
but I'd have to take a guess that it'd be from his penis. The eggs would have to come from his testes/ovaries, pass into his prostate/uterus, and then find some sort of exit. Assuming his scrotum is closed, the only other real exit would be through the penis. He'd be in serious trouble if his colon was connected to his reproductive/urinary tract.

14. Well, the prostate is "appreciates" via the rectum,
but I wonder if the easiest point of exit is the urethra?

20. Ummm, he wouldn't be bleeding from the ...
...rectum if the prostate was involved (yes, one can feel the prostate gland through the WALL of the rectum, but the gland doesn't secrete into the rectum) ------- ummmm, from the article I can only assume the POOR kid is bleeding through his urinary meatus (prostate---> urethra---->urinary meatus) would be my guess.

28. PLEASE read some anatomy
The urethra passes through the prostate gland. He'd be bleeding through his penis.

8. From his vagina.
Shocked Indian doctors discovered that not only did the boy menstrate, but that he had a vagina roughly wear his penis should be.

35. While I assume that you are being funny
that type of deformity does happen. When my daughter was in a University peds ward the baby in the next bed was being checked to see which sex it was because it was born with both a vagina and a penis. The doctors were doing hormonal test to determine which sex was more prominent. This looks like it may have happened in some foreign country where he/she may not have had doctors to treat this kind of disorder.

36. It was a joke aimed at bad doctors.
A la the joke from the Family Guy.

Peter: "Wow! It's a girl! Wait a minute, this girl has a penis! We'll have to do something about that! (picks up scalpel)."

Lois: "Peter, no! It's a boy!"

32. Nope technically you only need a partial uterus. The blood can pool
inside the body causing fatal condition if untreated

17. If the boy's menstruating, then he's hermaphroditic.
There's varying ranges, you know, it's not all about external genitalia.

9. They misspelled "prostate". Urethral bleeding? Rectal?
I wonder if he was born with very ambiguous genitalia.

I wonder what the fatal complications are that Mitra is talking about. Perhaps a cancerous tumor developing? I guess I need a refresher on functional male urology.

19. FYI - that never got us out of gym class!
The most we could get from that was skipping the mandatory shower after gym. Which, when you think about it, was probably not a real good idea.

18. Well sadly to say
Sometimes gender reassignment is done at birth when the outside does not match the hormones. This was done quite often here in the US by "well meaning" doctors and parents. Things like this just are not talked about.

But who knows what is really going on with this boy.

30. Yep. Doctors historically have prescribed surgery for ambiguity.
At least in the U.S. -- gender ambiguity or hermaphrodism is unusual but not THAT unusual. Typically the parents and doctor would discuss what should be done at the time of infancy -- leaving the child as is was not allowed. Often an ambiguous gendered individual would be assigned the gender of female.

Gender in human beings as it occurs in nature does NOT always involve male or female -- maybe one or two in a thousand have characteristics of males and females.

Right--something that hasn't manifested itself until now. Just because he doesn't appear to be a hermaphrodite doesn't mean he isn't one.
