Press Enterprise: Political grief
Political grief

10:36 PM PDT on Monday, August 15, 2005

Obscured in the media circus surrounding Cindy Sheehan is a genuine concern for the welfare of the grieving mother -- or for any person who has lost a loved one in the war on terror.

(snip)

Yet Sheehan has reminded the nation of the painful losses it has suffered during the war. Whatever each American thinks of the Bush administration's conduct in Iraq, Americans collectively shudder at every casualty report, and whisper words of hope or prayer every time they are reminded of the vicious nature of the enemy.

The president would do well to acknowledge those concerns, and talk frankly and often to the nation. Remind Americans that the cause is just -- a freer world is a safer world. But note as well that defeating jihadism and bringing self-government to the Middle East will entail risks, and sacrifices. The campaign against terrorism will take years, and could cost many thousands of lives.

The war in Iraq has divided America. But quitting the mission before its completion would dishonor those who have served, and give comfort to those who would stifle the freedoms that heroic souls like Casey Sheehan have given their lives to defend.
