When fury fans faith, be afraid

But religious fundamentalism in America has a lunatic fringe that includes killer Eric Rudolph, abortion clinic bombers and the protesters who issued death threats against Terri Schiavo's husband.

That the Schiavo matter became a consuming cause for pandering politicians shows the clout these folks have. We are justifiably alarmed at the violence perpetrated by violent religious fundamentalists. But we can't fight fanaticism abroad while dismissing it at home.
