We, in Missouri, understand these problem all too well, having experienced the great flood of 1993. In 1993, quick and decisive action by state and federal leaders lessened the impact of our tragedy. Similar actions are needed now, with a unified plan and purpose to aid the suffering in the Gulf Coast, and protect our nation from further economic damage. Now is the time for a unity of purpose to undertake real solutions.
To make recovery work, we must do more than just repair FEMA or allot funds for the effort. We must revisit many of the policies promoted by the Bush Administration that run counter to a successful effort. This is not the time to have tax cuts for the richest Americans, while our poorest citizens are without housing, food and water. This is not the time to cut $10.5 billion from Medicaid, placing the health of the most vulnerable Americans in jeopardy. And this is not the time to have an energy policy that does little to decrease dependence on foreign oil or lower gas prices, and provides only anemic incentives for alternative fuels.
