What Went Wrong In Iraq? --- Reeves
WASHINGTON -- I was booed by some in an audience in Sarasota, Florida last March for saying that history might judge the invasion of Iraq as the beginning of the end of American empire. But, for better or worse, that is what is happening: We are pouring out our power, credibility, good intentions and blood into the sands of Arabia.

The embarrassment (or humiliation) of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld last week is the noisy echo of the quiet desperation in the White House about what to try next in our domination and occupation of a country farther away than we thought. After taking down Secretary of State Colin Powell for arguing that the job was tougher than it looked, and taking down the military for saying more troops were needed to occupy, President Bush is taking down Rumsfeld for his arrogant unilateralism within the administration.

Now it is Condoleezza Rice’s turn. The torch, burning nearer to our fingers, has been passed to the National Security Advisor, the new boss of the new Iraq Stabilization Group.

How did it come this? History may find other reasons but so far some of our mistakes are obvious:

1. I really don't think Condo-liar's in charge
See Tweety yesterday? Actually, not a vomin-inducing show for once.

The main point is that saying Condo-liar is in charge is a leak gone bad--nothing's really changed, just shows how f**ked up things are in the White House.

2. Amazing, getting booed for speaking the truth
I am reading Al Franken's book (great read, I highly recommend it) and he covered the period when Clinton bombed Serbia, the comments made by Republicans then are 180 degrees away from what they are saying now.

There are people in this country who have no use for the truth, they only want to hear what they want to hear.

3. Reeves is great
He gets booed because people can't cope with any critical evaluation of policy. All the more so with foreign policy because it is us and them, the axis of evil. Critical analysis forces the observer to become an individual and make judgements, not only about his government but also about himself. Once all evil is projected onto the other side, we can only be all good. And who dares to say otherwise?

This is the mass pscyhe job that the media have done, it is associated with dictatorships and leads to totalitarianism.
