Expanding Iraq War into Syria is lunacy
Article published Wednesday, October 19, 2005
Dan Simpson, a retired diplomat, is a member of the editorial boards of The Blade and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

AS I suspected six months ago, and U.S. military and Bush Administration civilian officials confirmed, U.S. forces have invaded Syria and engaged in combat with Syrian forces.

An unknown number of Syrians are acknowledged to have been killed; the number of Americans - if any - who have died so far has not yet been revealed by the U.S. sources, who, by the way, insist on remaining faceless and nameless.

The parallel with the Vietnam War, where a Nixon administration deeply involved in a losing war expanded the conflict - fruitlessly - to neighboring Cambodia, is obvious. The result was not changed in Vietnam; Cambodia itself was plunged into dangerous chaos which climaxed in the killing fields, where an estimated 1 million Cambodians died as a result of internal conflict.

2. It would require the draft
While it would be fun watching all these spoiled brat College Republicans make excuses for not serving, it would unleash an eruption of protest on college campuses not seen since the Cambodia invasion of 1970.

4. Yeah, W has pretty well exhausted the needy and naive
Let's go for the rich republicans...Like any of W's relatives? No, that's not their thing. Like Vietnam was not W's thing, or Cheney's etc.

6. Considering the fact that Bush is totally and completely off his freaking
rocker, lunacy is right up his alley.

All the more reason why we need to watch what these cockroaches are doing behind our backs.

IMO, after the indictments, we need to pursue legal action to force them to repay the Treasury for the tax dollars they've squandered on their unnecessary war. Then they can slave away on the chain gang in prison to pay a little $$$ to the families of those who lost loved ones or had them come back injured from that nightmare.

8. Remember the draft resolution that was presented to Congress
Edited on Thu Oct-20-05 12:30 AM by Hailtothechimp
It would have given the president the option to use military force "in the region," but the actual resolution that was so wrongfully passed limited the scope to Iraq only.

Syria, and any other country they thought they could roll without too much trouble, has been their game plan all along.
