Sander Hicks: My 9/11 Book Tour: Reporting from the Red States
The Truth on Tour Report: Spirit of History Sighted in the Red States

I just got back from the so-called “Red States.” I went out supporting my controversial new book on 9/11. I was supported by my feminist folk-singer wife, Holley Anderson, who opened up our show. For two weeks, we lived out of a van, from New Mexico, through Colorado, Kansas, & Missouri, all the way to Baltimore; from the SouthWest, to the MidWest and back home through the MidAtlantic. I thought for sure we’d get some resistance, a few hecklers here and there, at least some tough skeptics who would defend the best-selling 9/11 Commission Report.

I was wrong.

Not one person cared enough to defend the official story about 9/11. After two weeks of gigs, speeches and discussions, I am impressed with the average intelligence of the American people. From left, right, and center, people packed the venues we played. Thanks to the internet and the nascent 9/11 Truth Movement, people are already skeptical about 9/11, that horror constantly invoked to justify our new era of permanent war, legal torture, and downsized civil liberties. The American people are aware of the basics: the neo-conservatives have squandered the US’s role in the world. 9/11 was either allowed to, or made to happen. But people we met already sensed this and were eager to hear more.

In my book The Big Wedding: 9/11, the Whistleblowers, and the Cover-Up my method was to interview government whistle-blowers, discarded informants and eyewitnesses to state terror. I wanted to get as close as possible to this living pattern, as personified by Randy Glass, Colleen Rowley, Robert Wright, Delmart Vreeland, and Brad Ayers. But live, on stage, over time my message changed. Well, not exactly my message, but my tactics. It’s hard to describe this in written words, because we’re talking about something that’s better expressed “live.” On tour, we filmed 46 hours for a documentary about 9/11 and the national body politic. What we’re going to try and show in this film is that over the course of the two weeks I worked on a new approach to history, not as the dead thing we were handed in school, but as a vibrant, conscious entity. History is generous with answers and patterns for those bold enough to ask. Hegel was right: history does have a “Spirit” that challenges and re-invigorates the authoritarian definition of “God” to which a brittle fundamentalism desperately clings. As an alternative, this Spirit is helping the people re-define “history”—it’s not about Columbus and the Pilgrims—it’s a rich, inviting place accessible to all. Once tapped into, this spring of truth is helping the people who drink from it change the world. $25 can get you a device that will tape your phone conversations. It’s legal in most states. Anyone can do break-through muck-raking research, anyone can pull corporate documents. Who owns what, and who says what? And who gets tense when you ask? You’d be surprised who you can get on the phone, just for trying. If you never did your homework in school, this is probably not your bag. But if you only did well in school when you were really turned on to a topic, then you’re perfect for the job.
