Before countries in this region carried out anti-colonial revolutions, nearly half of all American profits from foreign investments came from this region.
Transnational corporations and banks want to recolonize the Middle East so they can return to the good ole days. Our government gives $15 million a day to Israel's ongoing war against the Palestinians for the same reason-to keep the Middle East and its natural resources under its thumb.
In West Virginia, we should be able to relate to this. We have the most diverse plant and wildlife on the Eastern seaboard, yet as a state, our people are among the poorest. Although the number fluctuates, each year we are the second or third leading coal producing state.
Since coal barons began bribing and bullying West Virginians off their land at the beginning of the 20th century, abuses by companies have been endless. Just as Iraqi people could be thriving from the sale of oil, our state would reap many benefits - if money from the sale of our resources and subsequent destruction of our environment stayed within our state.
