If I Were Bush's Speechwriter - Andy Rooney
Edited on Sun Nov-02-03 09:41 PM by dArKeR
Years ago, I was asked to write a speech for President Nixon.

I didn't do that, but I wish President Bush would ask me to write a speech for him now.

Here's what I'd write if he asked me to - which is unlikely:

My fellow Americans - (the word "fellow" includes women in political speeches):

My fellow Americans. One of the reasons we invaded Iraq was because I suggested Saddam Hussein had something to do with the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. No evidence that's so, I wish I hadn't said it...

...

I've made some mistakes and I regret it. Let me just read you excerpts from something my father wrote five years ago in his book, “A World Transformed.”

I firmly believed we should not march into Baghdad ...To occupy Iraq would instantly shatter our coalition, turning the whole Arab world against us and make a broken tyrant, into a latter-day Arab hero …

This is my father writing this.

...assigning young soldiers to a fruitless hunt for a securely entrenched dictator and condemning them to fight in what would be an unwinnable urban guerrilla war.

We should all take our father's advice.

1. Great speech but the part quoting Bush 41 is the
best. And goes against everything 43 has done.

2. More hate mail for Andy...
But he can handle it. He was about the only one in the rush-up to was that had the guts to be critical of duck-anus. Good for Andy.

7. Rooney was telling Imus he was wrong to oppose the war
just a couple of months ago. I wonder if he remembers which side he is on two days in a row.

Andy Rooney: I Was Wrong, Bush Was Right

CBS "60 Minutes" commentator Andy Rooney has become the first big media personality to admit that he was wrong to oppose President Bush's decision to liberate Iraq.

"I have not been a supporter of his. I did not vote for him. And I was very critical of what he did here," Rooney told radio host Don Imus Thursday morning.

"And I must say that fortunately, he's president and I'm not," the former Stars and Stripes correspondent confessed. "It appears as though he did the right thing and I didn't think he was doing the right thing.

"And, if he's listening ..." Rooney added, before trailing off into laughter.

Later in the broadcast Imus teased CNN's Jeff Greenfield about how his network's notorious Bush-hating newswoman Judy Woodruff was reacting to scenes of jubilant Iraqis celebrating their liberation and kissing Bush's picture.

"We just got this in from AP," Imus said in a serious tone. "A suicide watch has been put on Judy Woodruff."

Greenfield didn't sound particularly amused by the taunt.

8. Rooney is one of the 5 moral people left in America. I don't know
if your quote is of context or not because of no link. I would have to hear the entire story.

He has more morals and integrity than the entire GOP Party combined.

9. I don't know the man's politics and I don't want to.
He's a shining example of real journalism. Even if someone were to prove him a Republican, I'll stand by that.

10. Rooney was awarded the Bronze Star with is not in his bios.
The citation for the Bronze Star read in part, “Technician Fourth Grade Rooney penetrated to the heart of St. Lo under small arms and open-range artillery fire and gathered, without regard to his own safety, firsthand descriptive material for a complete and accurate story.” The Rooney described was, of course, Andy Rooney of the CBS’ news magazine 60 Minutes.
