This Can't Go On - Krugman
Academic economists often cite Stein's Law, a principle enunciated by the late Herbert Stein, chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers during the Nixon administration. The law comes with various wordings; my favorite is: "Things that can't go on forever, don't." Believe it or not, that's a useful reminder.

For we're now led by men who think that macho posturing makes Stein's Law go away. On issues ranging from budgets to foreign policy, they insist that we can sustain the unsustainable. And when challenged to explain how, they engage in magical thinking.

2. I'm worried my local paper has stopped carrying Krugman
Is his column once or twice a week?

I don't remember seeing a Krugman piece in the paper in a couple of weeks. I don't see why they would cancel him though. The paper's editorial policy is somewhat liberal, definiitely anti-Bush.

5. Tuesday and Friday, IIRC
IIRC, most Tuesdays and Fridays (barring the occasional vacation or whatever); to be found on the New York Times editorial section. There's also an unofficial archive out there if you ever need to find a column older than 2 weeks (at which time they become unavailable without a fee at the New York Times web site).

6. And this too shall pass...
Thank you, Krugman, for that reminder.

My brother who is in his fifties, wrote a family e-mail regarding his lotto experience during the Vietnam war. I actually started the family e-mail by sending a link regarding the Volunteer draft board webpage. My brother responded to my e-mail and told us that the lottery was a traumatic experience which he remembers vividly to this day. He doesn't wish it on anyone. It only brought some relief when he pulled a high number. It was in the 300's. He thinks this war is a total disaster and that a draft will definitely make Bush a one-time president. My brother lives the Republican life-style, but I think he has hope for the Democratic platform for the same reasons I do.

8. Brrr...
That's from the chill that ran down my spine remembering the draft lottery. I was in my senior year in college--bingo! Numero 26!

Well, I didn't go... never mind how, I'm not especially proud of it. But it was a bad time. I really didn't believe things could get worse. But they have. Oh, they have.

Of course, I did win the draft lottery pool that a few people were running...

Krugman is simply restating the obvious.

In Orwellian Imperial Amerika, even the obvious must be continually reststated.

And are we all sure 1 + 1 = 2?

12. There are people I'm going to look back on
as being voices in the wilderness during bush's term and Krugman is one. He is always reasonable, articulate and a must read.
