Impeaching George W. Bush
Impeaching George W. Bush
By Onnesha Roychoudhuri, AlterNet. Posted March 6, 2006.

From discussion to action -- Michael Ratner and his fellow lawyers have drafted a call to impeach President Bush.

Until recently, talk of ousting President George W. Bush has proved little more than a distant rumbling. For too long, impeachment has been deemed implausible. It’s not going to happen with a Republican Congress, so the argument goes. Not with the president finishing his second term, not while we're at war.

But the distant rumbling is growing louder by the day, creating a resonant echo that is rapidly taking root in public discourse. “Impeach Him,” reads the cover of this month’s Harper’s magazine. And in a public forum in New York City last week, journalists, lawyers, and political figures came together to discuss the case against our president.

Since September 11th, 2001, there has been no shortage of news regarding this administration’s involvement in torture, lies, secrecy and obstruction of the law. Yet, there has been little discussion in the mainstream media of holding those in power accountable for the actions so diligently catalogued by the press. It is a conspicuous vacuum that helps to explain why calls for impeachment are rapidly gaining currency.

In fact, the case for the impeachment of President Bush is arguably the strongest in American history. The Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) makes this amply clear in its recent book, a concise indictment of President Bush that lays out four clear legal arguments that point to impeachment as a necessary remedy for the gross violation of our Constitution. The Articles of Impeachment Against George W. Bush covers illegal wiretapping, torture, rendition, detention and the Iraq war. An appendix compares the impeachment proceedings of Andrew Johnson, Nixon and Clinton to the comparatively more powerful case against Bush.

1. "not while we're at war"
What a ridiculous argument when the war is the primary reason for impeaching him.

And it is VERY important that we impeach Cheney at the same time.

5. Especially ridiculous since this damn war is a chief offense.
Even if the war was legit, he's piled up enough crap to proceed with impeachment. But then when the war itself and all the lies and deception behind it are added, it amazes me we are still having to "make a case" for impeachment.

(I agree: gotta include the quail-hunting expert, or else we're still screwed.)

10. Without a doubt darth cheney must be impeached at the same time.
In fact, the cabinet and half of the SCOTUS also needs to go.

2. My favorite combination of four words:
"Impeaching George W. Bush." It just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it?

7. Yes
And those words will roll off my lips out in public every day.

Now I have no illusions that it will resolve the blight of the American Political system but it is essential for our survival. And then the rest must go. All the capitulators and enablers.

9. I like these words even more:
"Breaking rocks in the hot sun."

The Constitution specifies that removal from office is the only punishment that can follow impeachment and conviction, but I still love the sound of those six words -- not to mention the image they evoke.

8. After the impeachment, it is very important that they be
sent to the World Court to stand trial for their war crimes and Crimes against Humanity.

16. He has the congress
and now the Supreme Court. No checks and balances. Everything is one sided. The Progressives need to turn this country around. Somebody has to stop them. And if you try you are an enemy of the state. I expect the Patriot Act to be used and abused against our own citizens in the near future. The rich and powerful are stamping out the middle class, the blue collars, and the working class...labor, you know the people the rich and powerful hate ...unions... well this country is a union and we are here to form a more perfect Union...not a Corporate, Conglomerate, Monopoly, War Profiteering, Fascist, meglomanics, Neocons, Our country is being sold out and we are sinking into bankruptsy. I expect a big Depression when the bottom falls out on all of our dollars. We should all buy euros. Enough of my rant, already.
