Widow leaves US [NPR] radio $200m
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/3248803.stm

Maybe all is not lost in the 'culture wars' yet...?

US National Public Radio (NPR) has inherited what is believed to be the largest single donation bequeathed to an American cultural institution.
NPR was left more than $200m by Joan B Kroc, the philanthropist widow of the founder of worldwide fast food giant McDonalds, Ray Kroc.

--

The bequest amounts to almost twice NPR's annual operating budget.

NPR is a private, self-funding non-profit company which is supported mainly through membership charges, station fees and private contributions.

It provides programming to more than 750 public radio stations and has an audience of about 22 million listeners each week.

--

Now all you need is a Gore-Soros alliance for TV... and there may actually be some balance in the US meeja - as opposed to craven folding to wingnut interests ala CBS...

1. And she donated to the local PBS station
She gave $5 million to the KPBS station here in San Diego, too. She was from this county (Rancho Santo Fe). She's donated locally here to many causes, including $50 million to the University of San Diego peace studies center. Sorry, I don't know th official name. With all she gave away, she still left $1.7 billion behind!

2. Read the fine print
the bequest is to be left intact and invested and the profits split each year among the NPR subsidiaries. While this is a great bequest from a fine lady, one who started out poor as dirt,it is in no way a panacea to all the money ills of left wing media.
