From Baghdad to Dover
This article will be running on the home page tomorrow, but since today is Veteran's Day I thought it would be appropriate to post it here first.

From Baghdad to Dover
by Sheila Samples

President George W. Bush says he is the one responsible for giving the hugs and for comforting those whose young loved ones have fallen - broken and bloody - in his mighty crusade to rid the entire world of evil and to bring every single evildoer to justice, one by one by one.

Yes. He is responsible. We are not to worry our pretty little heads about it. We are to remain silent because our president says he is our national voice. He is our conscience. With each fallen son or daughter, he speaks for us - although a bit glibly and far too rapidly. In his best John Wayne "I'm only gonna say this once" voice, Bush says our hearts-and-minds-and-souls-and-thoughts-and-prayers "go out" to grieving mothers, fathers, wives and children of these brave soldiers and marines.

When asked why the "Chief Hugger and Comforter" refuses to address the daily loss of American life, why he attends no funerals, why he is AWOL from solemn duty at Dover Air Force Base, his spokespersons say there's no need to repeat the heart-and-soul mantra every time an American is killed, because - by golly - this is going to be a long war.

They say that even to acknowledge such depressing news only detracts from the really really good things that are going on over there. If we dwell on the bad news, they suggest it must be because we hate America. Harping about the dead means we are enemies of freedom - no better than the terrorists. It means we don't support the troops who remain - those who are waiting their turn to make their final journey - from Baghdad to Dover.

Bush has decreed that there will be no solemn ceremonies, no honor guards, no depressing video of Americans' mournful return to their beloved homeland. He has decreed there will be no images of a nation with its face pressed to the fence, hands gripping the bars, weeping and moaning for its lost innocents.

For, who knows? Someone who does not support our troops might cry, "Murder!" Fortunately, Bush trusts his faithful corporate media to give us what we desire. If we want murder, there are plenty of basketball players, California fertilizer salesmen, serial killers and snipers to keep us occupied.

As of Nov. 6, a total of 392 U.S. military personnel have been killed in Iraq. Six more perished on Nov. 7 when a Black Hawk helicopter was shot down, and another killed in an ambush. On Nov. 8, two more were killed when their convoy was bombed. As of Nov. 6, 1,886 Americans have been wounded, many of them suffering horrible burns and loss of limbs. There have been seven additional soldiers wounded since Nov. 6.

Some of us believe that it is time for Americans to gather round and comfort our sons and daughters who are wounded, and to grieve for those whose lives were snuffed out before they had time to be lived. It's time for a group hug - from Bahgdad to Dover. Those patriots who are too busy waving their flags to notice our collective national loss are welcome to join us. There's nothing treasonous, or even unpatriotic, about reaching out to say good-bye.

Editor's Note: The following list does not include the eight soldiers killed on Nov. 7, 2003, nor the two reported killed on Nov. 8, 2003. We also mourn their loss.
