A Right Turn Holds Perils For Bush

By E. J. Dionne Jr.
Friday, May 19, 2006; Page A21

As they watch President Bush's approval ratings tumble, conservative activists are offering a surefire strategy for presidential recovery: Bush should move to the right and "rally his base."

There's one problem with this approach: It could do the president's party far more harm than good, even within its own ranks. The conservative view ignores the roots of the president's difficulties in the disaffection of moderate voters who are more concerned with performance -- or the lack thereof -- than ideology.

The Post-ABC News poll released this week found the president with a 33 percent approval rating and suffering losses in esteem almost everywhere. Conservatives are by no means his biggest problem.

In January 2005 Republicans who described themselves as conservative gave Bush an astonishing 94 percent approval rating. The new Post-ABC survey, conducted May 11 to May 15, put Bush's approval rating among conservative Republicans at 76 percent, down 18 points.

He'll work himself into a tiny little box he won't be able to get himself out of and you'll be stuck with him until it all dries.

3. Stunning news.....
but not a complete surprise. On the Al Franken show this week, they were talking about Bush's desperation. The sands of the hourglass are running low. The country despises Bush far more than people realize.

So what do they do for survival? Why rouse the party faithful. Whip them up into a frenzy. That should do it! Let's see...what has worked in the past?

Well, it would be nice if they could find another Terri Schiavo. Burning the flag...yup that's a real kick in the gut for the flag-wavers. There's always the gay issue.

But this time...half-hearted attempts won't do. They've got to go for the big one.....the Bible. Or maybe the Cross. Just watch. (never underestimate these people).

4. I kept re-reading this
because I didn't think bush could get anymore out there in the rapid right wingnut fascistshit zone.

Isn't that what bush is doing with the troops on the border and English being the "official language"..throwing his rabies infested fans some tainted meat?
