Blumner: Bush's arrogance starting to show beneath presidential suit

Robyn Blumner
ST. PETERSBURG TIMES
This is how George Bush got to be president. He was the perfect frontman for the corporate interests and right-wing ideologues who were looking for a guy who was both electable and malleable.

But as the war in Iraq continues to go badly, sending back news of a daily casualty count, Bush's common-touch artifice is beginning to wear thinner than the backside of his Crawford jeans. Showing through is the real Bush: his swaggering arrogance, unidimensional understanding of issues, congenital lack of sympathy and intense pique at challenging questions.

The White House has adopted a determined strategy of keeping Bush from being connected to the messy parts of the war. This is a Vietnam lesson misunderstood. The Bush people apparently believe it was the pictures of body bags, not the fact of them, that caused public opinion to shift on the war. But the out-of-sight tactic is showing the commander in chief as callous and indifferent to our deployed soldiers and their stateside families.

Bush doesn't have the capacity to speak persuasively to the public about anything, never mind the war that he and the neocons around him started -- a failing that might prove his downfall. When the best Bush can come up with in response to the guerrilla tactics killing American troops by the dozens is "Bring 'em on!" it is clear he lacks any deftness.

3. STARTING to show? STARTING? the man has never been anything BUT arrogant
and unaware, and totally indifferent and ignorant. the only difference is, some of the sheeples are finally beginning to realize what the rest of us have known from the beginning.

4. Yup. He's a charmer, that one.
I believe that The Bushie has been a blessing and a curse to his handlers*. On the one hand, they probably felt that Georgie was perfect because he would let them do their dirty work 'behind the scenes' and would go along with it, because he wouldn't question them or overrule them. So he was a great "team player". He doesn't realize he's supposed to be in charge.

On the other hand, their 'fall guy' keeps making bloopers. He says things like 'we had to get Saddam out, because he wouldn't let the inspectors in', and many other gaffes which have been chronicled in recent books. So they will naturally want to limit his contact with the public, and certainly press conferences.

So now, to his vexation, Ole George is the object of lots of hate and animosity, especially on the eve of his trip to London. Maybe they want it that way???

*the real men behind the screen.
