Voting rights law renewal becomes headache for GOP
06/25/2006

Rep. John Lewis is lucky that Georgia has Sonny Perdue as governor. Otherwise, Rep. Lynn Westmoreland and his House allies might succeed in permanently blocking renewal of sections of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

The Perdue administration and its fierce defense of Georgia’s voter ID law have become Exhibit A in the case to keep the Voting Rights Act intact and maintain close watch on Georgia and the rest of the South in matters related to minority voting.

“You still can’t trust the South” is a sentiment that many federal lawmakers, Democrats and Republicans, share.

Even so, the outspoken Republican Westmoreland along with Rep. Charlie Norwood of Augusta managed last week to delay temporarily a House vote on renewing the act. The Republican House leadership is not happy. They see the delay creating problems in the November election for some moderate Northern Republican representatives. Several non-Southern Republicans are fearful of being labeled anti-civil rights.

5. Your post made it to "Greatest" so you don't need to be in LBN...
I am not a mod, but I would bet they moved you out of LBN because of the following two LBN posting rules:

1. Do not post opinion pieces, editorials, or other stories that are not news.

4. When posting articles, always use the published title of the article as the title of the discussion thread. Additional information may be included in a thread title (in parentheses) if it helps to make the title more clear.

Your thread is about an editorial and your title did not exactly match the title of the editorial.

Thanks for posting it! :hi:

7. Ok!! I'm a Zealot...it's true

Really...this is the ONLY issue that matters.

TODAY in the NY TIMES was another article on Bobby Kennedy's piece in Rolling Stone on the great need for complete overhaul of the voting system.

The article talks abotu how the core Democrats won't pick up the truth, and how the Repubs blow him off, for now, as talk of conspiracy.

This is the ONLY issue that will resonate full beat with the public.

Your VOTE DOES NOT COUNT...we will INSURE THAT IT DOES FOR GENERATIONS!!!!

FORCE VOTING REFORM TO THE TOP OF THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL AGENGDA.

2. K&R
This is an EXTREMELY important issue. If you have a Republican representative, call, fax, and e-mail (ALL THREE) to let them know that you expect them to support renewal of the entire Voting Rights Act. Mention Georgia's voter ID law as a prime example of why the act is still necessary. Tell them that if the states that fall under the act are doing nothing wrong then they have nothing to fear from it.

Democracy is on life support. If control isn't taken of at least one of the houses this November, it's RIP.

6. Reminds me of a scene in Jurassic Park
Jeff Goldbloom is on the back of a jeep with a wounded leg with a T-Rex gaining and he says something like, "I hate being right."

I hope we can get control of both houses this November so no one has to see the DEMs go belly up.

8. Non-Southern Republicans are fearful of being labeled anti-civil rights...

Meanwhile, Southern Republicans are surging in the polls and promising to create "a sparkly-white America for the 21st century." The party of Trent Lott and Strom Thurmond returns to its roots.
