Daily Mail: What if Bush really was assassinated? (Historian)

<snip>

Here, a historian looks to the future — and imagines the terrifying consequences. BEFORE that fateful day — November 9, 2006 — historians liked to say the world could never again lurch into global crisis because of one man's death, as it had in 1914 when Austria's Archduke Franz Ferdinand was murdered in Sarajevo, sparking World War I.

The assassination of John Kennedy at the height of the Cold War hadn't led to Armageddon in 1963, so why should things spiral out of control now if a president was murdered? That confident view was shattered as global communications networks froze from overload while transmitting round the world the picture of the 43rd President of the United States slumping forward after being fatally shot in the stomach.

The murder of George W. Bush set off a global crisis with which we still live today, ten years after he was killed.

Of course, in retrospect, we historians could see it all coming. In the summer of 2006, there had been the 'proxy war' between America and Iran fought out in Lebanon between their two regional allies, Israel and Hezbollah. That war ended badly for Israel and emboldened Iran to defy the United Nations and, more to the point, the United States over its nuclear ambitions.

<snip>

At home and abroad, the gloating over Bush's death soon gave way to a sober realisation that he had actually been a check on Dick Cheney's ruthless way of defending America from enemies at home or abroad.

As much as I hate Bush - I do not ever want to see this happen. In fact I hope he lives to be 100 so he can see that history does not vindicate him!

1. I think this movie was produced by the RNC, and is a horrible construct
Never mind inciting someone to do such a heinous deed, just the 'sympathy factor' is likely to help the GOP.

This is manipulation of the public of the worst order. And who benefits from that sort of message? Not the Democrats, that's for sure.

5. It would be the biggest party the world has ever seen
But it would be an inside job if it did happen and would probably be used as a pretext to start WW III.

If noone is allowed to protest near him and he has hand picked audiences for campaign events he isn't likely to be shot by a civilian is he? Bush is even protected from hearing negative news from his own people. He lives in a bubble.

4. This line is amazing . . .
. . . 'I thrive on crisis,' Cheney explained, 'it was peace that got me tense.'

6. 'House of Cards'
Check out the very last episode of the 1990s BBC mini series House of Cards.

Prime Minister Francis Urquhart is about to be exposed in a devastating scandal -- his own wife arranges his assassination so that he becomes a political martyr -- and his memory will be preserved in a positive light.

8. Failure of FBI, CIA, Homeland Security, Department of Defense,
Secret Service, State Department, Immigration, Interior Department, Chicago Police Department, etc., etc., etc.

On the pecking order of assassins, it was a Syrian-born male that fell through the cracks. I don't believe an assassin sponsored by the Syrian government(?). Why create trouble for themselves? Looks like a Mossad operation.

9. Let's hope nothing happens to harm Bush
It would change the way some people think about him and he could go down in history as something he is not. A good or decent president.

10. I agree completely; I hope he lives well past 100
Sitting there all alone in the corner wearing his Napoleon hat and clutching a liter of Jim Beam as the phone never rings. Nobody comes over. No speaking engagements are offered. Silence.

It's a pure narcissist's hell and it couldn't happen to a nicer fella.

So he won't be able to retreat into a dementia-induced fantasy world, like Reagan did.

I feel so strongly about this that if he needed one of my kidneys (or more likely, half my liver, given the amount of damage he must have done to it) -- I would give it to him, just to make sure that he has a long and healthy old age.

15. This is why impeachment is far superior to assassination.
Edited on Fri Sep-01-06 03:50 PM by meldroc
As much as I despise the Bush administration, we don't want to turn Dear Leader Dim Son into a martyr. Thus the strategy should be to get a Democratic Congress, start investigations, get as many of the Bush Administration's crimes into the spotlight, and then begin impeachment proceedings not only against Bush, but Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Gonzales, etc.

Get the whole gang out of power all at once.
