Woman Knocked Unconscious While Shopping
Ah 'tis the season.

ORANGE CITY, Fla. Nov. 29 — A mob of shoppers rushing for a sale on DVD players trampled the first woman in line and knocked her unconscious as they scrambled for the shelves at a Wal-Mart Supercenter.

Patricia VanLester had her eye on a $29 DVD player, but when the siren blared at 6 a.m. Friday announcing the start to the post-Thanksgiving sale, the 41-year-old was knocked to the ground by the frenzy of shoppers behind her.

"She got pushed down, and they walked over her like a herd of elephants," said VanLester's sister, Linda Ellzey. "I told them, `Stop stepping on my sister! She's on the ground!'"

2. That has obviously been replaced by the Gospel according to Dow Jones

Which obviously has as its new golden rule: "Buying things is the true meaning of life, and screw unto others before they get your cheap stuff"

The supreme irony of this travesty is that it was done during a season which is supposed to celebrate the life of a man who encouraged his followers to give away all of their material possessions to the poor and not to store up their treasures here on earth where they may gather dust. Seems that teaching has gotten quite lost in the cacophonous din of the avalanche of corporate advertising which elevates the acquisition of large quantities of cheap things to the level of a great virtuous human endeavor.

4. Too symbolic for me!
Maybe now that woman knows how the hundreds of communities and thousands of workers felt when Walmart came in and flattened competition and slashed jobs and salaries, all so idiots like this could fight for the chance to get a cheap DVD player.

Anybody hear make or sell bumper stickers? I want to find a really patriotic one--flags and all that--that says something like

Buy American--Boycott Walmart

or may Support America--Boycott Walmart?
