Even as he talked about North Korea's nuclear ambitions and other weighty matters, President Bush on Wednesday returned to his occasional role as fashion critic to the White House press corps.

"If I might say, that is a beautiful suit…. And I can't see anybody else that even comes close," the president told NBC's Kevin Corke, who was wearing pinstripes, in the course of a Rose Garden news conference that focused on North Korea-related diplomacy and the Iraq war......

Soon after, the president asserted that CNN's Suzanne Malveaux was the "first best-dressed person here."

By the time Bush called on Jim Axelrod of CBS, the reporter felt compelled to start with a defensive comment: "My best suit's in the cleaners," Axelrod explained to the president.

"That's not even a suit," Bush retorted, eyeing Axelrod's sport coat and slacks.

The gaggler Corke minimizes the strangeness of the butt hole in chief, mewling, "That's the way he likes to make connections. He still has some frat boy in him. He likes to tease people."

2. That's not "connecting," that's bullying.

He starts out by putting the reporter on the defensive, whether it's a compliment or insult. Same with his nicknames. It's not the reaction of a frat boy, it's the reaction of an insecure bully.

or "What's the matter with you, can't you take a joke?", when challenged. Insecure bully is right, jobycom ... I've encountered this type of behavior before, and there is nothing "just" about the "kidding". Rather, it is sad, frustrating, and downright cringe-making when someone in such an important position acts this way.

June 14, 2006 — The president was in a jovial mood during his Rose Garden press conference Wednesday, joshing with reporters, excited to aggressively defend the Iraq war in the midterm elections, optimistic about his recent trip to Baghdad.

Then he was told a reporter he playfully teased about wearing sunglasses during the press conference has a serious vision problem and is legally blind.

I still remember how shocked I was in college at a workshop on campus, I asked some (I thought) substantive question; the leader started to answer and then said something like 'you really look like my cousin.'

It freaked me out and totally derailed whatever line of thought I might have had.

All the reporters are supposed to act like trained seals and laugh at the totally inappropriate interjection by the Chimp in Chief, and when the reporter moves beyond the awkward moment then he or she looks like a total asshole for asking a tough question when they're all having such a swell time. It's one of Chimperor's nasty ways a demeaning the reporter and throwing him off his stride by making the whole focus turn on the reporter, not to * where it should rightly be.
He's notoriously thin-skinned, and this gives him a way to be a dick to a reporter with everyone watching, and still have it be seen as him just "connecting" and being "friendly."

The classic inappropriate "friendly" outreach came when David Gregory asked Chirac a question in his native language while on his native soil. Chimpy couldn't hide his fury and made that remark about, "He says a couple French words and he thinks he's INTERCONTINENTAL." He couldn't hide his cruel intent behind the words and it was very telling.

All this hilarity and joking are always on Chimpy's terms, which are not in the least bit "friendly" or evidence of trying to "connect." Thinly disguised put downs, nick names, head rubbing, commenting on appearance are all about control and abuse of power. What a little, little, man he is.

Johanna Neumann seems to be seeking to excuse the President's comments on the garb of the press corps, characterizing them as "light asides". She goes out of her way to find people who dismiss it as some kind of vestige of his frat boy self and his "way of connecting to people".
I have a different take.
In a press conference dealing with a nuclear North Korea, he gives the impression of someone so out of his depth that he casts around for something to comment on until he can think up something, anything, intelligent to say.
The fact that the "light asides" focus on how people are dressed is a glimpse of the way he actually does "connect" with people he has no respect for. He demeans them in not so subtle ways, then calls it "teasing" when caught in the act.
When he doesn't realize he's on camera or mike, we get a much truer picture of him. Adam Clymer from the New York Times is called a "major league ass-hole", and two national leaders are treated to his contempt in Europe this year; Tony Blair is addressed as "Yo Blair", and spoken to with a mouth-full of bread roll, and Angela Merkel is treated to an unwanted neck rub.
