Somebody Should Put the Republicans in Control of this Country

By Dean Powers

North Korea announced on Monday it had tested a nuclear bomb and within 48 hours the Republicans, who have wielded majority power for six years, blamed the democrats. Surprise, surprise. But even conservatives have admitted that this is not going to fool enough people to make up for the Mark Foley sex scandal.

Americans know who is in control. They know which party is at the helm. The republicans may as well blame FDR for the nuclear test; Lord knows one of them has probably tried. What's become clear about republicans lately is how delusional they are when they fear they are going to loose power.

Within the last 24 hours the republicans have come up with a strategy that they think will win back voters they've spent six years disappointing. Fox News puppet Oliver North is among several who want Congress to take up a bill that would fund a missile defense system to show that the democrats who don't vote for such an outlandish proposal are spineless. The "missile pretense shield" is laughable and it shows how baffling the republicans' behavior really is. One look at the terrorist attacks in Britain, the US, Spain and the Philippines over the last few centuries will show that terrorists aren't using missiles to carry out their attacks.

Republicans would show more sense to suggest that Congress fund the construction of 300 spaceships to attack incoming UFOs. It would cost taxpayers roughly the same amount of money and accomplish just as little. It's times like these when we should remember the lessons of Mark Foley. The republicans will say or do anything to hold power, and that includes letting sexual predators prey on children for 6 years after the first warning signs surface. The republicans have spent half their era in power accomplishing nothing and the other half blaming the democrats for it. Should voters want 10 more years of this sort of behavior, they certainly know how to vote.

2. Yup ... and I have vivid memories of Gingrich being introduced to
("sweetened"?) "thunderous" applause in the House ... like he single-handedly went into Berlin in 1945 and personally slitted Hitler's throat ...
