Study: Fat, boozing mice stay healthy
Belly up to the bar, boys!!! Triple shots of cabernet sauvignon for me an' mah friends!!!!!

Huge amounts of a red wine extract seemed to help obese mice eat a high-fat diet and still live a long and healthy life, suggests a new study that some experts are calling "landmark" research....Scientists say it's far too early to start swilling barrels of red wine. But they are calling the latest research promising and even "spectacular."

The study by the Harvard Medical School and the National Institute of Aging shows that heavy doses of red wine extract lowers the rate of diabetes, liver problems and other fat-related ill effects in obese mice.

Fat-related deaths dropped 31 percent for obese mice on the supplement, compared to untreated obese mice, and the treated mice also lived long after they should have, the study said.

Astoundingly, the organs of the fat mice that got the wine extract looked normal when they shouldn't have, said study lead author Dr. David Sinclair of Harvard Medical School. And Sinclair said other preliminary work still being done in the lab shows the wine ingredient has promise in lengthening the life span of normal-sized mice, too.

For years, red wine has been linked to numerous health benefits. But the new study, published online in the journal Nature on Thursday, shows that mammals given ultrahigh doses of the red wine extract resveratrol can get the good effects of cutting calories without having the pain of actually doing it....

3. This calls for a quote...
"Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, son." -Dean Vernon Wormer

Apparently, it is if you're a mouse...

6. I loved that line!
This exchange is also noteworthy:

Dean Vernon Wormer: Greg, what is the worst fraternity on this campus?

Greg Marmalard: Well that would be hard to say, sir. They're each outstanding in their own way.

Dean Vernon Wormer: Cut the horseshit, son. I've got their disciplinary files right here. Who dropped a whole truckload of fizzies into the swim meet? Who delivered the medical school cadavers to the alumni dinner? Every Halloween, the trees are filled with underwear. Every spring, the toilets explode.

Greg Marmalard: You're talking about Delta, sir.

Dean Vernon Wormer: Of course I'm talking about Delta, you TWERP!

5. More on the extract.
It's called "resveratrol," is already available as a nutritional supplement, and comes from much more than just red wine: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resveratrol.

7. The equivalent of 100 bottles of wine per day
that is what would be required to match the doses given to the mice.

9. I love red wine, but it's been the culprit many a morning after.
The permanent headache would offset any benefits excessive consumption might offer. Ouch.

12. I have heard it's the preservatives.
Why more preservatives in red than white? You have me wondering if I can find preservative-free wine by the liter in this area. Hmmmm. Thanks for the idea!

15. Oh wow. Thank you!
I really appreciate that, because I've cut way back on the red wine because of the hangover. I will check it out!

17. I doubt it's the preservatives
It could be the fat blocking, anti-fungal properties contained in resveratrol:

The mechanisms of resveratrol's apparent effects toward life extension are not fully understood, but they seem to mimic the effects of calorie restriction. This seems to function by means of lipase inhibition, reducing the absorption of fat through intestinal walls.

Only the "Trans" form of the molecule is capable of activating the mammalian SIRT1 gene in vitro; it is also the form predominantly found in red grape skin (red wine). Red grapes found in some regions (such as the Hudson Valley in New York) often have far higher concentrations of resveratrol based on climatic differences such as prevailing humidity (and the resulting higher fungal attacks).

not that lower your weight and cholesterol level!
