Microsoft to Announce Linux Partnership
Microsoft Is Set to Give Linux a Boost Through Partnership With Novell

http://online.wsj.com/article_email/SB116249026689311557-lMyQjAxMDE2NjAyMjQwOTIwWj.html

Microsoft Corp. is entering into an unusual partnership with Novell Inc. that gives a boost to the Linux operating system, a rival to the software giant's Windows software, according to people familiar with the companies.

Under the pact, which isn't final, Microsoft will offer sales support of Suse Linux, a version of the operating system sold by Novell. The two companies have also agreed to develop technologies to make it easier for users to run both Suse Linux and Microsoft's Windows on their computers. The two companies are expected to announce details of their plan today at a press conference in San Francisco.

:)

3. thanks for investing in open source...!

Open source has always been about altruism, in the end. Thanks for being altruistic and supporting the open source movement!

I'm only partly joking. The truth is that no matter how much folks talk about making money on open source products, applying snazzy business models to open source software, etc, profits are rarely generated by the open source software itself, i.e. as opposed to "value added" services and so on. I'm a lifelong open source proponent-- don't get me wrong-- I just think it's difficult, and often silly, to apply traditional business models to open source software products. AND I think that's the way it should be!

9. Blame Larry for Red Hat
Red Hat's stock plunged 20% following rumors that it would be bought by Oracle. Now they're taking it over without buying it. Oracle is pushing all customers to adopt "unbreakable Linux" on Red Hat and is offering their own support for half price. Even issuing their own patches. Its unbelievable.

4. the difference is that when linux needs hourly patches...
...they show up hourly rather than six months after the code holes have been thoroughly exploited!

5. Combined with Oracle's moves, I suspect this is all an attack on Red Hat.

6. Seems unlikely to be motivated by altrusim.
A momentary collusion among some of the jackals to attack a rival. Later on they will turn on each other again.
